General Cycling Discussion - Cycling outfits sexy?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Who else out there thinks that the opposite ( or same ;) ) sex looks great in cycling gear? I for one think that toned women spinning down the road in lycra couldn't look better.
I only wish I could find someone who was equally into cycling, or at least supportive of it. My last g/f thought I was crazy to out on the road on a bike. If I took my bike down to Target instead of driving the 7 miles to it, she berated me for it. Needless to say, I'm no longer with her.

In general, I don't think you can go wrong with a woman who is toned and is wearing tight clothing :D

You should read "Duane's Depressed" by Larry McMurtry, I think you'd get a kick out of it :)

I don't think spandex looks good. Great body or not. Now a well built woman with some flesh dug out of her shin and wearing body armour after flying down a mountain. Whoa!!!

Well, it was my wedding anniversary yesterday, and my wife bought me a jersey if that says anything :)

I'm on the other side of the fence. There are VERY few individuals that look good in spandex.
There are some, but not many.
Healthy women look attractive. IMHO
And I think I look Ok in spandex, so long as I just breathe in

Just my opinion but, spandex should be a privilege, not a right!

The vast majority of the non-cycling public thinks that we look silly and strange in our skin tight shorts and garish jerseys. If you find members of the opposite (or same) gender sexy in their bicycle togs, it's a pretty good sign that you, too, are a bike-a-holic.

I'm not sure whether you were joking or not, but honestly, i've got to agree with you here. Something about a MTB jersey/pants and body armor is pretty cool.

Yeah, I have to agree that a woman in armour, a few scrapes and maybe a tear in her shorts - WOW. Haven't seen one yet, but I can dream!
:p
On the other hand, there are some things
I just don't want to see. . .
for the most part the folks I see in Spandex look ok,
I know I think I look like a dork in full kit so it kind
of tempers how I view other folks.

Don't get me wrong, but some of the guys looked pretty cool in skinsuits yesterday at the Games! In a manly sense...
Hmmm, please don't quote me on that! ;)
Rich
I think most people look really good in their cycling gear. Some of those guys, ooh mama! However, I feel llike the shorts make by own butt look huuuuge. I think a lot of women have this notion that unless we're built like a spoke we look huge from behind and I'm no exception. SO I think if someone is coming up behind me they're thinking, "Man her butt is huuge" but they're probably thinking. "Nice bike- what kind of forks are those?" Actually, most of the time I don't think about it, I'm not THAT neurotic. And while I may think my SO is crazy when he goes out in really horrible weather, I never berate him for riding his bike. I'll just say, "you're crazy man, you're gonna catch your death!" ANd then I'll sit down and watch tv while he goes out and freezes in the slush.

Depends. A velochick in lycra looks good, mainly because it's almost impossible to be both overweight and a serious cyclist. Then again, I look at the human body as a marvel of engineering (despite a number of bad design flaws...).
However, because of some form of stupidity so low that it falls under my threshold of comprehension, a large (pardon the pun) percentage of the women at my workplace wear tights and/or spandex clothing; this wouldn't be a problem, except for the fact that most of them have the body of a Stay-Puff marshmallow.
We have perhaps five women out of over a hundred that are capable of seeing their toes. It's pretty sad.
I'll agree with the above quote from Lord Nikon (a la Hackers): "Spandex is a privilege, not a right."

Actually, that was Cereal Killer's line, but it definately holds true. Around here (maine) the typical scene is a skinny little guy with a woman weighing a bout 300 pounds. And of course they always wear skin-tight clothing. It's quite a digusting thing to see.

Very serious. I don't see too many spandex cyclists out here. The odd xc mountain biker will wear spandex but the body armour clad bloddy cyclist is the thing here. If you have scars and ride hard the girls love ya and visa versa. :)

Gotta say...don't like the bright multicolored jerseys on men or women. I refuse to wear them. Don't like to wear long spandex shorts either. I'm having a heck of a time finding solid colored camisole tops made out of good wicking fabric and shorter lycra shorts that don't cost $100. But I did find some and order a few things from performanceinc.com if anyone's looking for that sort of thing.
But hey...if you've got a nice body, then the bright colors make you get noticed even more. And after the initial shock of "WHAT THE......", comes 'whoa, nice butt.'

Maelstrom...I just realized you're in Whistler! I'm new here. I went there a couple years ago during the summer. I went on my first real hike there to the top of Little Whistler Peak (the higher one was closed). Took a train ride to Lilooet. I LOVE it and I really want to go back some day. How long are the summers there?

I wish the spandex shorts did as much for my ... frontside as they do for my backside. They certainly don't make one look more endowed. Can I say this?

Na, just makes drafting easier!
One question, why won't ladies believe us when we say that look fine? Oh well the mysterys of life. By the way, I know I look dorkie in spandex, but it feels nice so to quote Richard Feynman "What do you care what other people think"!

Depends what you want to call summer. The season itself lasts from May till Sept. We have a dead time (I mean DEAD) in april and part of may and from Oct to Nov / mid december. You can ride early and late but be very careful of which trails you use. You have 6 - 8 months of riding time.

don't like the bright multicolored jerseys on men or women I think I look good in spandex except for the big stomach hanking over the top of them. Seriously tho I wear bright colered jerseys to be seen by car drivers. A couple weeks ago a friend of mine, wearing a dark jersey was hit from behind and killed. Makes you think. Karl

Some bald people (myself included) prefer to be this way. I haven't started losing any hair to age/genetics, but I also haven't spent a summer with hair in years. I shave it to the skin on a daily basis with razor and lather. It's more comfortable and leaves more money for goodies. I can shave to the skin without error, but can't give myself a good haircut. If I avoid paying $9 every two weeks for a haircut in the summer/fall, I gain about $90 to buy other stuff...like spandex.

I dunno, my non-cycling brother was under the impression that that was why the crotch was padded. :p
(And BTW, some of us don't mind baldness at all. In men that is, not personally.)
I have got to join in on this conversation....
I not only check out men in their cycling gear...I also check out all men in trucks with bikes on their racks. Got to love a man with a truck....doesn't matter if it's new or held together with duck tape.... just as long as it's loaded down with bikes!
I don't really know if "sexiness" was the criteria but my lady seems to like me in cycling clothes more at 190 pounds than when I was a 250 pounder. She even buys me some once in a while.

Womens spandex shorts should not be manufactured larger than a size 5 US... a size 7 women will still look fine in a 5, but a women larger than a 7 in spandex is scary... oooooooooooooo!:roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

Your bound to get some flack for that :D .
It's not necessarily true that it is scarey, as long the proportions are good and they are out there workin' it. Maybe there should be a spandex size limit though :D.

In the City of Chicago, it is rare to see a cyclist in spandex. (Numerically speaking, in the last year, I've probably seen more cyclists dressed up as Santa Claus than I've seen dressed up in spandex. Of course, that's partly a consequence of cycling in Santa Rampage last December....)
What's the point of wearing spandex if you're not going to get super hero powers?
My own preferred cycling outfit is along the lines of 'bike geek'. I wear the new york lock chain around my waist like a belt. The back of my helmet has a sticker that reads, "Normal People Worry Me." I have a mirror attached to my glasses and a cheap bandana under my helmet. This time of year, when it isn't necessary to layer up against Chicago wind and snow, you might find me in a "One Less Car" t-shirt or just any shirt that is comfortable and loose.

Actually, back in ages past when I weigh 134 pounds, I still wore a size 14. I have trouble believing anyone actually wears a 5, except for small children, and possibly anorexic supermodels who live on non-fat yogurt and raw spinach.

Hey, some of us just have a really, really fast metabolism. It's not always easy to find the smaller sizes that fit when you're 5'8", 120. Half the stuff winds up too short.
Back to the cycling gear. I do not wear it. My husband and both throw on an old t-shirt and shorts. I like the bright colors of the shirts, but the padded shorts look, well, odd. I guess you get used to how it feels, but why not just get a padded saddle?

Personnaly, I only eat liquified raw spinach; it's much smoother coming up.
I wore bike shorts with a chamoise yesterday for the first time, and holy crap, it's like wearing a diaper! I'll have to check out other people's butts in those things to see if mine really looks as funny as I think it did. Like I'm carrying a load.
Nat,
You'll get used to it, and then won't be able to go
back to nonchamois shorts.
The thing is, almost every cyclist you encounter
won't think "wow, she has a tremendous tush"
(and I'm not saying you do),
or "somebody got some huggies. . .",
they will however think "whoa, look at the quads on her
. . . way babealicious!"
And remember, most shorts are black, and you know
what they say about black having a slimming effect
I think that overstuffed feeling is worse for guys.
A little slurry of olive oil and water help the
spinach come up a little easier.

I have a hard Selle Italia Flite saddle, so cycling shorts are a must on all but the shortest rides. Padded saddles, like the one that came with my bike, were uncomfortable to me. Then again, I have a hard time sitting on a couch for very long. Just my personal preference.

LOL at some of the responses. I’m too much of a bike junkie to notice what people wear or if they have huge backsides; unless it is something so outrageous I can't help but exclaim "Oh my god!" More interested in seeing what type of hot bike their riding.
:D
Yes, the bike is important, but....then I check out the legs. I'm trying to determine if this guy is out for a once a year ride or is he serious? I'm a sucker for smooth strong legs ;)
I think men wearing spandex is perfect...let's see what you got. God knows women have had to expose their bodies in unnatural outfits to show what they got.
I was joking that I wanted to wear all pink spandex and those tri-athlete shorts. I thought this would make those waiting to get past me in their cars a little more patient. :p

Riiiiiiiiight, FRORyder... you never notice the fine form astride the hot bike... sure...
Remember, pal, I know you. ;)
Physically fit people always look good. The person who said, "The clothes make the man" had it backward.

Oh, you dirty boys..... Isn't it strange how the same picture only with men would be FUNNY? Thanks for the tip, lotek!
Yikes, I wonder what happens if any of those women crashed....fantasizing already guys?
I do not consider myself or others sexy in cycling clothes mainly because when I am riding, I am usually not thinking sexy thoughts. I am usually thinking "I can make it up this last hill" or "I wonder if I can pass that dude up. Let me try!" Etc.
I especially do not think Howard is sexy in spandex. YUCK!
I think cyclist look OK in most enything they are wearing including lycra, etc.
We certainly look and feel more comfortable walking around in bike clothes than say a hockey goalie might look in full regalia.:p
