Road Cycling - tire recommendations...

Hi,

I've gone through like 6 tires in the last 2 years. I'm wearing them all out probably because they are cheap! Can you recommend a performance road tire that is resistant to flats?

What kind of tires have you been using?

and what air pressure are you using?

and what type of flats are you having? thorns, snakebites, blowouts??

I've been using Continental tires with Mavic wheels. I run 120 psi in them. Can't tell you how many flats I've had. Mostly in the back tire. That is until I put a really heavy thorn resistent tube in a heavy duty tire. Now the tire tread is wearing out flat. Where there use to be grooves to redirect water from the tire. I need a really tuff tire here in Colorado. Something bulletproof would be nice. I hate running a heavy tube in it. I've been looking at the Michelin Pro series of tires. Anyone have any good experiences with them?

Good, long lasting, all-around performance road tire? Continental Grand Prix 3000. I tried the Ultra 3000, which is a good tire, but has one third the tread life of the GPs. I've also hade experience with Vredestein Fortezza Tri-Comps, which are comfortable, fast tires, but wear very quickly.

You might want to put some "Mr tuffy's" liners in. They are lighter than those heavy tubes and stop thorns.

If your getting "snakebites"(two holes side by side) you might want to increase your tire air pressure. I'm a big boy and will snakebite continually if I run 100-120psi. I have to run 140psi to stop them, but the modern tubes and conti's will take it with no problem.

I'll check out the Cont. Grand Prix 3000s.

I use tuffy liners in both tires too. Just about as heavy as I can get. Only thing missing is the slime in the tubes. If I can get a better tire then maybe, just maybe I won't have to run all that extra stuff in and around the tube.

I've had excellent life and love the feel of Michelin Pro's, however if you need a bulletproof, long lasting tire why not try Conti's Grand Prix 4 season, with their polyamide layer which is meant to stop cuts, and I think an extra layer of kevlar under the tread.
