Toe straps vs. Clippless for Track

What's the prevailing method these days for clipping in on the track? Toe clips and straps or clippless?

If you're using old school track pedals with toe clips and straps, where are you getting your cleats? From what I can tell, slotted cleats are hard to find.

If clippless, is it more prevalent to go with Look-compatibles and max out the tension, or do a lot of people augment clippless with toe straps? And if you are adding toe straps, what's the best way to go about it?

Or, is any manufacturer out there making clipless pedals specifically for track use with some fancy way of never popping out during a spint?

Sprinters need to use clips and straps, or a clipless pedal with a strap over it.

Endurance trackies can use road pedals.

i understand that there's a track version of the speedplay zeros pedals that has more tension. i'm sure there are others (i think). But what i would like to know is where you would fit the straps onto these. From what i understand track racers use straps on top of clipless pedals, but is there even a slot to fit straps into any clipless pedals? how do they do it?

I've only seen it used with Look/Shimano-style pedals.

I use the standard Speedplay Zeros on the track at T-Town.

Shimano SPD-R's. Rivet a metal loop over the tension spring and run the strap through that. The British track team use SPDR, including the sprinters, although I have noticed that not all them worry about the strap.

I was always dubious about Look on the track and wouldn't use them. I just didn't ever trust them. I have limited use with SPDR's on the track with no problem. I wouldn't expect any either. If Hoy and Queally can use them, so can anyone.

oh, one thing to consider. If you have a larger platform, it'll make for better sprinting, unlike the zeros that have that small ritz cracker size surface area. I think it has something to do with spreading the force or something.

I just brought home my first track bike, a new Bianchi Pista, and I'm totally psyched! I've been riding a fairly crappy loaner in my class at the velodrome, and one of the things I am really looking forward to with my own bike is clipping in. I threw some Shimano 105 SPD-Rs on, and I think I might like to add a strap, just in case.
