Classic & Vintage - Shimano 600 high flange hub?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hi-flange hubs were very popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s and were often a sign of a mid-to-higher quality bicycle. I suspect Shimano DID make high-flange "600" hubs at one time.

I have a set just like that only without the sticker. Came on a Ross Super Gran Tour Professional that was new in box. It had all Shimano 600 components: the early, ornate type. Nice wheels, I originally put all the parts onto a Raleigh SuperCourse, still have the wheels, shifters & cranks. Don
Yes, the 600 series was available in high flange models. There were freewheel, freehub and black freehub versions, each available with 120mm or 126mm axles. The large flange models were available into at least the early 1980s.
As John E, states, the large flange hubs were popular on mid and high end bicycles. This is because these bicycles tended to be competition orientated and it was thought that large flange hubs built a stiffer and stronger wheel. Small flange hubs, with their supposedly softer ride, were generally marketed for touring.

Maybe the clever marketing types were making hay even back them.
