well, i couldn't find any track grips in minneapolis anywhere, so i decided to try and do something i've seen done, jamming oury mountain grips onto the tops of my track bars via the drops. only i can only get about a half an inch before things get hairy.
what's missing, a stick of butter?
i think i heard hairspray, maybe?
just use water, or soapy water.
Hairspray, spit, air compressor, anything slick that will eventually dry will do the trick.

i heard that, too, but i thought that was as an adhesive...do you think it would also help slide them on?

i tried rubbing alcohol (to get some off) and wow, did it work well.
No track grips in Minneapolis? Methinks you weren't looking hard enough. When Kenwood Cyclery closed a couple weeks back, I know I saw a some there for cheap...
At the shop I work at, we use either windex or compressed air to put on grips. I'm guessing the windex is somewhat more available to most people :D

wd40. spit. sweat. anything.
By some ODI lock-ons. They slide right on the bar and clamp on with an allen screw so they never twist or move. I will never go back to non clamp-ons. You can get them for around 20 bucks at www.pricepoint.com or www.jensonusa.com

that's the problem...everyone has so far referred me to kenwood cyclery, which, unfortunately, is no longer with us.
it's true that one on one was closed yesterday when i was calling around, and i meant to call them today but didn't get to it, but a tall and very helpful drink of water at the hub with a fantastic vocabulary seemed to think that nobody had 'em.
i'll probably call one on one tomorrow, unless anyone on here can confirm whether they have them, but otherwise i'll probably just order them through harris cycles.

I used rubbing alcohol to put on some 4mm thick Yoshida "Champ" grips. They were still hard as hell to get on. However, I agree with tlupfer, WD40 does nasty things to rubber grips.

I used water too. I used dish-soapy water the first time, but they ended up slipping all around for weeks, and whenever it rained. Plus they got all dirty and gummy. Just some water will let you slid it easily all the way around the drop. It drys in an hour, and you're golden.
I usually use hairspray. If that's not available, Windex or something similar that evaporates quickly.
