I want to put two sections of a SRAM 9-speed chain back together, so I need to replace a missing pin. Can I just get some replacement pins designed for Shimano chains and use those?

It would most likely work, however, SRAM has its own way of connecting 2 chain ends - the gold powerlink connector. http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=12099

Or maybe you don't need any new parts. With a chain tool and some skill, you can put a standard pin back into a link. The easy way out is taking out one link but pushing the pin not all the way out so it will stay on the open link. Simply add the other end of the chain and push the pin right back in.

I had a chain break, so it's in two peices now (normally it's onle long chain with a powerlink to connect the ends). I want to put it back together, so I have to replace the broken link.

Just get a second powerlink. I've seen people run a chain with two powerlinks with no ill effects

Depending on the age of the broken chain and why it broke, it may be better to replace it altogether. Chains are not expensive (unless you want them to be).
