I'm interested in getting one but the nearest dealer that stocks them, according to Dahon's site, is 138 miles away. Is there anyone in central Indiana, maybe even east central Indiana, that has a boardwalk I could take for a short test ride before I commit to one? Sure the Boardwalk is cheap, but $300 is quite a bit to spend for something that won't get used if it isn't comfortable.

I don't know if my own experience will be of any help to you but here goes. I purchased my own Dahon 2003 Boardwalk S1 on December, 2003 sight unseen. I did not test ride one nor have I ever even saw one-even though I live biking distance from Dahon's global headquarters. I purchased one on the recommendation of my favorite LBS and my own research. I have never regretted my decision as I paid for a custom job far more than $300.

Please read my threads on this subject on these forums as well as Dahon's own site.

Where's that dealer? Chicago? I might be worth a nice, weekend road trip. Make a vacation out of it.

That's what I did. I was in Chicago for the marathon and took a couple of days off afterward to go to tiki bars, eat at vegetarian restaurants, and check out folders. All of these things are not possible here in Nashville. :) Anyway, I wound up buying one from Rapid Transit and having them ship it down to me.

A pretty high number of people do seem to get their folders sight unseen, without a test ride. In a pinch, I probably would've done the same. But I was glad I was able to get a test drive in.

It's actually in Portage, MI. As far as taking a vacation to Chicago is concerned, If I went there I'd have to go alone. My wife would consider a trip to Chicago more of a punishment than a vacation. Someone pointed me to a place that has the boardwalk 1, I suppose it's cheap enough to get, untested. Plus the less expensive one leaves me with plenty of cash to build it up how I please. I'll probably either lace up this hub gear I've got at home or go fixed.

Please post your decision and your resulting customization of the S1 on this forum. I think there are people here that might be impressed and inspired by your bike.

Will do!

I normally build things Johnny Cash style, but I think I'll try to work a little faster on this one. Going to place my order later today. 1 to 5 days shipping... an eternity where new toys are concerned... ah well.
