Mountain Biking - Bike advice (please)

Hi everyone, over the last couple of years i've been into dirt jumping & a bit of street (BMX). I love watching dual slalom & i'd like to get involved, i need a bike 1st! Ok so i'm from England so a distributer based in England would be much preffered, northern would be ever better, i suppose my local shop(s) could get a bike for me if i wanted though...
I'd like it to be in the range of £400-£750, with pretty decent compnents all round (ie not rockshocks with a sick £400 frame then crap for the rest)

I hope i can get good setup advice here :). I wouldn't mind custom building my own, but i'm sure i'd end up over-spending and wanting to buy top of the range everything =\. thanks a lot :).

I have not riden their bikes but I have herd good things. Since you are doing more BMX and street then I would suggest staying with a hard tail. If you get into slalom then I would go for a FS bike (just my preferance).

Consider a DMR Trailstar, Sidekick or Rhythm. Get a nice older Marzocchi (like the Z1 dual) and you're set.

I've been looking into the Trek Bruiser 2, seems like a good, very strong bike, hydrolics on the $1000 model (£645). I've read a few reviews and the only bad things are the seat & grips... one the higher priced model.

The one Richard D states is for Brant Richard's, quite a famous (well in the UK) mountainbike journalist turned frame designer. His story was in a recent issue of Mountain Bike World magazine.

His On One bikes look pretty cool and got some rave reviews. As above DMR, Planet X etc are all worth a butchers too, but if you can, try having a go on a bike before you make your final decision.

Also worth a look is the Orange Ms Isle, or outside the UK industry, the Trek Brusier got rave reviews albiet it comes with a rigid fork stock.

I have a Brusier and i could not ask for more! i got it Ridiged and put a DJ 2 on it~!

Ok here is Canada's contribution... .243 Bikes (www.243racing.com) is an awesome dj/ds bike with very strong tubing and a typical geometry for djing. Very nice bike.

If you want a list of great djing bikes check out the ht section on www.unrealcycles.com he only carrys strong djing/urban/ds bikes. If its the best he has it...
