I've given my 26 year old son all the pro-car arguments I can think of but he wants to take the plunge, sell his truck and go carfree. It should work out just fine. He's in college and has no dependents. He pays his own expenses and thinks he has better places to spend his money. But I think the major issue for him is the opportunity to get enough daily exercise to stay as physically fit as he was when he got out of the army.

I guess what made me decide to stop discouraging him was that he told me that lately, when he drives, his right foot twists a little as if it wants to unclip when he takes it off the accelerator pedal. I thought that was funny and it left me without a good comeback.

It sounds to me like you did a great job raising your son. Good luck to him. It's not as hard as one may think to go carless, after all they weren't always around. :roflmao:

Congratulate your son on giving himself a raise!

Haw! It's actually very satisfying to see someone weigh the pros and cons and, after making a rational calculation, decide to dispense with the car.

I'm thinking about going car-free myself, and selling my Jeep to my dad so atleast I don't have to see my baby go to some stranger. I just can't see any reason not to go car-free, the cost savings is insane by not having one.

I'd go carfree in a heart beat if I lived at college instead of commuted 40 miles each way and didn't race on the weekends. Good for him, tell him to use the money to buy a new bike.
