Road Cycling - what's my level?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I ride every morning, usually around nine miles. My average speed is around 18mph (if that even matters). I have been cycling for the last two summers, and am beginning to really enjoy riding. The bike I ride is my dad's old Huffy he bought when my parents got married. I need a new bike, but what price range should I be looking into? Would you consider me a beginner and suggest I get a $500 Fuji Finest? Or would I require something better such as a Cannondale R700? Would something like a Colnago C40 be right up my alley, or just overkill? I don't want to be stuck with a bike that will fall apart with the amount of riding I do or force my to do a massive upgrade a few years down the line. I'll have roughly $2000 in my bank acount by the end of the summer to get a bike, but I can't spend it all because I need some pocket money for when I go to college in the fall.

If you're going to buy at the end of summer, you'll might have difficulties finding a model and size you want since the season is pretty much over by then and the manufacturers are starting their 2003 models.
If you're lucky, you might find what you want, in your size (and it should be nicely discounted) else maybe you should wait for next season?

I would say try and buy a bike now. You should be able to get a good deal on a 2002 model. Also, if you can afford it, go with the better bike, it will or should be lighter and it will have better components. But either one will definitly be better then the Huffy.

I think a Colnago C40 is just a little bit overkill. A Specialized Allez A1 Sport is what I recomend.
