Anyone else see the new version with Johnny Depp. I usually like Depp's movies, but I kind thought it really Stunk... The critics are raving about it though..

Hadn't seen it. I thought I'd take my nephews. They're dying to see it (ages 6 and 8), but if you say it's that bad, I'd better bring a book and my headphones.

I just don't see how they could do it better than the original... Gene Wilder was the bestest!

see i usually don't like depp's movies, but i really liked his character.....dark twisted bad clown whats there not to like :D ....i just didn't like the songs, too cheesy for my likings, but the 2nd one i just made a habit of getting up and grabbing something from the kitchen, then come back in as depp' would be moving on to the next scene...

closer to the book, from what i hear....

i'll peep it big screen as soon as its in the parkway in oakland....with big comfy couches pizza & beer
:D

Well I did see it and thought that most of the way through the movie it was GREAT. Even better than the original, but consider it is not trying to be a "duplicate" of the orignal, but more of a different variation/interpreation.

That being said, it was great until........the ending completely ruined the movie. They had the same basic ending as the original, but went through more to get there and drug it out so that when the gift was bestowed, it was kind of anti-climatic.

BTW....Koffee......Johnny Depp was a "different style" than the Gene Wilder version. Much darker and probably the best written "eccentric character" ever written (done superbly by Depp). I had heard that before the movie Depp wanted to make sure the movie went a different direction than the original because he didn't think the original could ever be topped....he considered it one of the best movies of all-time.

Apparently Roald Dahl, and fans of his book never liked the Gene Wilder film. This one is supposed to be truer to the book.

Also, the Wilder film was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, this film uses the correct(book) title Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I've seen them both and think both of them are great. It's really hard to compare the two, they are quite different. The new version with Depp is closer to the Roald Dahl book. The newer version is visually more exciting with the use of modern film making technalogy. I must admit it was a little difficult watching Depp's performance, as I love Gene Wilder's character, but over the course of the movie it grew on me and I enjoyed him. IMO it's hard to improve something that's already perfect. If you can watch this film without comparing it to the original movie (if you liked the first one), it should be very satisfying, especially if you're a fan of the quirkyness of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp.

They actually did make a reference to that and a few other Depp/Burton movies too.

There was a scene where he was doing the ribbon cutting ceremony and from the back, while he was holding the big scissors, you would have sworn it was Edward Scissorhands.

Please never let anyone elses opinion determine what you watch or don't watch.
I usually won't read reviews, because I don't wan't to have a preconceived like or dislike for any movie based on what someone else says.

I can wait to see Charlie on DVD.

Gene Wilder was the bestest! :D

I'm also careful when recommending a film to someone. If I say "Phenomenal film, you gotta see this!", they usually come back with "It was okay." because it was oversold to them. I now just tell people "You might wanna check out this film." and they can judge on their own, without any preconceived notion of how good it will/won't be.

I found Depp's characterization super off-putting. there were moments when he was really charming, but he was, overall, strange in a way that was out of step w/the character as written. and the backstory of the dad I have some reservations about. but it was the best thing tim burton's done in quite some time.

... Gene Wilder was the bestest!

Gene Wilder was great because deep inside we thought he really would be Willy Wonka. In other words Gene Wilder didn't have to "act" a little crazy because he was a little crazy. IMHO

For me me Orson Welles "was the bestest!"

I really liked it. Saw it twice. Bekah is begging me to take her to see "wonka wonka" again!!

It was truer to the book then the original (with the squirrls) I thought, and I must say I really liked the fact that "Willy Wonka" was darker in this version. Not as friendly as Gene Wilder's take. But I've always liked Tim Burton's films...so that has a lot to do with it. I don't know which I like better...I like them both.

saw it today, liked the scissorhands reference, and also the tips of the hats to wilder's performance. kids liked it, and, contrary to our local review, didn't find it "disturbing" and the weirdness was entirely appropriate.

but movies for kids this summer really are limited ...
