Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Choosing components...build a new fixie, does it really matter which parts??

So i have search thru the forums and read thru sheldon bown's site. I got a good understanding about fixies now.

I have decided to go with a IRO frame either Mark V or Jamie Roy.

As i was serach thru some online sites, there were no specific sections for components. For example I was looking for BB, there were none that mention for fixed gear. So my question is that does it really matter what i go wiht a Shimino DA or U or a Campy (blah blah blha). I could really choose any BB as long as it fits in teh 68 cm BB of the frame?

So, the only thing that matters its the fixed rear hub right everything else is the same as a road bike???

a lot of people prefer to go with 165mm cranks on fixies to help with spinning and prevent pedal strikes on turns...

Your components need to match each other on at least a few counts. Campy bottom brackets use ISO taper, which won't work with nearly any other cranks. If you are trying to do things cheap, forget about campy, and get a Shimano BB, which will have the JIS taper, which works with other japanese made cranks, like Sugino, Shimano, SR, Suntour, etc.

The other important thing about a BB is how long the spindle is, if you are using the big ring of a converted road double crank, like the cheap and easy to find used 105/600/sora cranks out there, then you'll probably want 107mm. You may need to make some measurements though to find out exactly what you need.

Other components aren't really 'fixed' specific. Make sure your drivetrain parts are all the same, either 3/32" or 1/8". You can use whichever you want, but 3/32" stuff is more available and cheaper.

Choose whatever stem and bars you want, as long as they fit each other, and the stem fits your fork. Choose whatever wheels you want, choose your saddle, and make sure your seatpost fits the frame.

To get a good start, look at the component lists for built up IRO bikes, then if you deviate, make sure you are getting equivalent parts.

You have to consider chain line with the bb issue other than that its pretty much up to you.

I have a chainline question. If I decide to get this Miche group on eBay, will I have any noticible chainline issues with my Miche cranks and IRO hub with an EAI cog?

should work.... the Campy Chorus BB also works good with the Miche crank. (the Miche BB is loose ball)
