Okay...I had the neatest experience tonight. I was at What-A-Burger (probably not the wisest choice nutritionally speaking) but I was at the right place at the right time. So I'm sitting there eating my salad (lie...) and there is a group of teenagers sitting a few tables over, laughing like crazy. Then this one guy starts choking and his friends are like "cut it out Brian, quit messin around". Then he's grabbing his throat and one of his friends says "dude, I really think he's choking". I jumped up and ran over there and pull him up, he was starting to stand when he saw me coming over. I get behind him and perform the Heimlich maneuver, four good thrusts and a big wad of food is launched onto the floor. Holy cow...it worked!!!! Then his girlfriend (or I assume) says to me "OMG you just saved his life". It all happened so fast, I really didn't have time to think. I have to say though, that kicked my adreneline in, big time. I don't know about saving his life, but I do know I was at the right place at the right time. Boy am I glad for the first aid refresher course I took in December. I had to get certified for CPR and figured I'd take the first aid companion course too since it was only $10 more. You hope to never have to use it, but it sure is a good skill to have.

Well done! I can't imagine choking on a burger, but it would kind of suck to die that way. "A local teen was killed last night by a quarter pounder with cheese..."
Looks like you get to wear the hero badge for a day

Cool!! I choked on a bite of burger in HS and while I was wheezing and turning blue, the group I was with just kind of edged away. Thanks for nothing you ****ers. Honestly, probably all that gave me the time to recover was I was a bigtime swimmer and skindiver and could go without air for longer than most people.
You're a hero.

That's pretty awesome! Good on ya for helping a total stranger out. A lot of people would just freeze up, or would assume the kid was just fooling around.

WTG Princess!!!
It works better if you deck him in the stomach. Or do a jump kick. There's only so much force you can impart by pulling back, I'm sure you can impart a lot more by nailing him with a good right hook.
Woohoo! I'm going to carry you around in my pocket because I'm choking on food all the time! :D This guy is never going to forget you. Good job!

Aw, I used to use that old "I'm dying here" routine to meet Heimlich Chicks all the time. If his girlfriend hadn't been around, I bet he would have asked for your number.
Good job, anyway.

I'v heimliched(sp?) myself before. I was home by myself and was eating a jolly rancher and then somehow it slid down my throat and I started choking. I rammed my stomach into the edge of a table to pop it out. Of course it was still good so I couldn't just throw it away...

Nicely done!
I'm CPR certified, and I hope I never have to use it. Good stuff to know, though!

Cycleprincess, I truly believe that you were there to eat "salad" for a reason. You are a true hero, and I'm sure that while he was choking, all kinds of things were going through his mind. I'm sure his friends were all freaking out. But you had the calmness of mind and the speed to react and the results were fruitful. Good job, lady!
Forum*rider, you are such a goof ball! :p Uh...was it sour apple?

That's what I call doing the right thing. Too often it is easy to think before we do what must be done and someone ends up getting hurt or worse. WTG!
Hey can I keep you in my pocket for next time I choke during my long ride? I don't think I'll need the Heimlich, but maybe a couple of good pushes!

a long time ago I learned to give myself a heimlech using the edge of any random object, since I never trusted most of the "friends" I had in high school for anything more than goodtimes. It helped me one day when somehow I managed to choke on a piece of gyoza (lesson: chewing is good!).
I'd try to explain how it's done, but doing it wrong can be very bad, and it's best to see it in work, it's tough to explain :(

Nice job! When do you think you'll get sued for any "mental anguish" you caused the poor kid?;) Hmm, I guess I'm a little cynical. Hopefully, he's just thankful for the assistance.

What a great rush that must have been!!! Good thing you were there. :)
It's stories like that why I beleive there is definitely something watching over us (if you don't want to call it God, then that's your choice). Think of the sequence of events, taking the first aid course to have the info fresh in your mind, then going to a place you normally wouldn't go, being there at "just" the right time to use that learned technique.

Congrats cycleprincess. At least they were thanking you. Of course helping a drunk out of his upside down truck is a lot different.
Okay...I had the neatest experience tonight. I was at What-A-Burger I get behind him and perform the Heimlich maneuver, four good thrusts and a big wad of food is launched onto the floor. Forget what they say on the commercial that there is truly "getting out Whataburgered". Sorry had to, just saw that stupid commercial last night.

I've done that once or twice. Its amazing how simple it is and yet how few people know about it or think about it when the time comes.

Well done! Now if the kid had been eating a salad like you were, likely none of this would have ever happened.... :D
