Advocacy & Safety - SUV drivers need a special new tax

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

SUVs and the drivers who own them suck. They dont use them off road, except when they parallel park them and climb the curbs. Many SUV owners are horrible drivers in regular cars b/c they don't think. I cant even tell you how many times I have seen little people (women and men) behind the wheel of some Envoy/Navigator/Surburban driving like an ass trying to compensate. It actually should be against the law for some people to have SUVs (e.g. new drivers, teenagers, people who have lots of infractions) It is the wastefulnesss in the character of the SUV owner that tries to justify their existance as well as their selfishness when they spout out how safe they are for themselves in the event of a collision (to say nothing of the carnage they do to regular cars when they imapct them). Here is a little free advise from a lawyer, "if you kill someone in your SUV and you are at fault, your insurance can not cover the entire cost (in damages) for the average life, you will lose your house and any other valuables you own in order to cover a judgment. This is the reason auto insurance has gone up exponentially since SUVs really hit the market. It is also time to step into the future and realize that the liquid that comes out of the hose you put in your tank is a non-renewable source product and not some magic liqiud from unlimited bottomless well most sissies/women tend to think. Many SUV owners have never even seen what gas actually looks like. -LOL- Get rid of your SUVs especially if you dont use them for what they were intended and make the world a better and safer place to be and save some money and possible somebody elses life at the same time. Additionally, it might make U.S. sponsored regime change in oil-rich countries unecessary.

I hate to rain on your parade, but this isn't the forum for this kind of ranting. There's plenty of other places to vent this kind of thing. This forum is for constructive discussion about the logistics and mechanics of living without a car. I think you may want the main advocacy forum or something similar. Thanks.

This thread should be moved to the angry forum (A&S).

I agree. A personal dislike of SUV's doesn't have anything to do with car free living.

Yep great post, I love the vitriol, honestly! But, this belongs in Religion and Politics, Foo, or something. This forum is all about the practical how to's and question answering that results in more butts on bikes :-)
Moved to more relevant forum.

Hmmm... seems that d_monie1 has posted the exact same rant (or essentially the same... I didn't take the time to compare every word) in several threads. For example:
SUV drivers are stupid (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=125459)
Lets have some fun!!!..I love BOTH my SUVs (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=123924&page=5&pp=25)
Trolling, anyone?
I wouldnt doubt that d_monie1 is 15 years old, his posts seem to make me think he is.

Well since you reviced his post that had been dead for 3 days, I'll go ahead and ask why you did?

The SUV’s only ‘crime’ is that it emits as much CO2 as any other large car (and considerably less than a London cab, which seats only five yet has a larger foot print than a Land Rover Discovery.
The entire UK transport sector represents less than 20 per cent of global CO2 emissions. Motor cars and Motorcycles have to share the same sector with unregulated trains, planes and smelly cargo ships. You would have to make allot of trips to Walmart to match the amount of CO2 emitted by the average refrigerated boat importing your coffee beans from Kenya.
But cars are easier targets. Big, bright, beautiful, mobile monuments to their owners’ material success. Odd, that they should inspire such powerful resentment… SUV loathing is a prejudice that dares speak its name.
And it’s such a waste of time and effort. If you want to save the planet, please learn to look beyond the architecture of my car. Next time you go shopping consider how many items you buy come from abroad rather than how much money you can save on your weekly shop. But if you still feel the nead to examine my life style in such a way then maybe you should have a own good look at your own life.
So redeem yourself. Assuming you do believe in personal transport, why not concentrate your energies on making cars more efficient and, ultimately, emissions-free? Petrol-electric hybrid cars are now available and some of the first to be produced are SUVs. Major manufactures are researching hydrogen power and think versions may be as little as 10 years away.
Then what are you going to get worked up about? People with big houses?

Ahh it's a nice Sunday afternoon, back in newport beach on a day like this I'd probably be kickin' back at the cafe' at the local small shopping mall, you know, the one on Westcliff, and watching the 90-lb trophy wives in their SUVs drive over curbs, flower beds ..... small children...... (Barbie voice) "Parking's hard!"

Just ride up to Stanford Mall and you can watch the same thing.
I agree. SUVs are marketing illusions.
- SUVs are marketed as 'safe' vehicles when in fact they degrade safety. For the SUVs occupants, they are less safe due to their tendency to roll over in turns. For other road users, SUVs are a danger to other cars (high bumpers smash small cars) and they are a danger to pedestrians and cyclists (wider wheel stance takes up more lane width, bringing the right side of the SUV closer to the walker or rider).
- SUVs are marketed as luxury vehicles. Are they? For $50,000 you get the bumpy ride and big plastic dashboard of your average pickup truck. For the same price you can get a luxury sedan with a far smoother ride and a plush leather interior.
For everything that a soccer mom does with an SUV, it can be done with a small wagon -- for less money, consuming less oil and gasoline, emitting less greenhouse gases and exposing cyclists to less danger.

dfranchiesmom that's a thought! I was considering tooling around that area today, guess it will be an early evening ride at this rate, lol.
JamesV well said!! The book "High And Mighty" is a good one, that your library probably has, on SUVs. Great reading!!

No, I don't know that one. Tell me - how you know so much about what everybody else is doing? And what's wrong with the "90 -lb trophy wives" except for your smug attitude towards other people who are doing better than a down-and-outer dropout? Or is bicycle advocacy promoted by jealousy, envy and casting aspersions at a whole raft of sterotypes?
