The frame is marked Tru Temper made in USA. Shimano drive train, Weinmann alloy wheels, diacompe brakes.
Dirty but in very clean shape. Worth 50 bucks? I am mostly curious about the frame quality.

50 bucks? Yeah! Do it! I believe this would be an 80s model because of the Tru Temper.

I had an old Traveler from '79(?)
That was one of the nicest bikes Ive ever owned
comfortwise. I put a zillion miles on mine in
Cadillac comfort until someone looted it from my
freshly burnt apartment building
The rims were the only thing I eventually had problems
with. Get it !

I also had a Traveler bought new in 79 or 80 and I liked the bike but I trashed it by riding it along the beach getting salt water all over it, and leaving outside in the rain and whatever. The components were corroded by the salt and the frame had some internal rust when I junked it last year. The frame is sturdy and was designed by True Temper to handle loaded touring so the bike is a bit heavier then a racing bike...but this is a touring frame not a racing frame; also since it is a touring frame the frame tends to be more comfortable riding then a race frame. But if the one your looking at is in good shape then $50 is a decent deal.

I've got an '80 traveler that I've just finished replacing the rims/derailleurs (alloy's and shimano 105 gear) and a few other things on. Pics on my website (linky below - should have pics of new stuff tonight).

Yours does sound like an early-mid 80's model due to the alloy rims and a few other things, though pictures would certainly help confirm. I haven't been able to find a lot of information on the 80's travelers online, the latest data was from the '78 and earlier models (google: schwinn traveler specifications)

I'm enjoying the traveler that I picked up, though the frame had some spotty surface rust from scratches that I needed to clean up, it's a good riding bike over all. Planning on doing a 100k on it in about 6weeks so we'll see how much I like the bike after that. lol. Like others have said - go for it.

That is a sharp looking bike! Enjoy it. No idea on the year, but no need to worry: someone here'll know.
