Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - do you messenger types really think so lowly of the wee conversion types?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Back when I got into riding fixed in 1999-2000 track frames were cheap. Now they are really expensive even for the old moldy stuff that shouldn't cost that much.

I'm amused at the reference to the Kissena Velodrome? Aren't "real" dromes actually made of wood? If you are going to be a purist, might as well go all the way. ;)

Maybe, just maybe - it is stupid crap like this where everyone gets so concerned about what people are thinking and...wait, I was a messenger. I hate conversions. And I hate these conversations! Break through!
Developing new interests is a terrible terrible thing. You should be asking people what to buy or think or do before you even attempt an original motion. Really.

Oh, and by the way - you should have used the SEARCH feature before posting this - it has been cried about before.

I liked the writing first time. And I still do. Who knew. Guess I suck.

y'all don't suck. the writing is fine (i missed it first time around). what the joker is writing about is real. because he is human, there will be flaws in his arguments. because he his human, he will not see everything from all directions, at once. because the writing was posted on the internet, many persons will rush to fill in the gaps, with their own flaws. and so it goes...

among my own flaws, there is a tendency sometimes to get chuffed over what a stranger might think of me. but i catch that before too long. i mean, really. no need to tell anyone what kind of bike i ride. or why.

Blah blah blah, I really don't give a rat's ass about this subject. I'm not looking for validation from a white guy with dreads who's got a tool-cool-for-school attitude. I'll ride what I like, be it track, conversion, or full on roadie with those new fangled "derailleurs" that seem to be all the rage these days. If you can't deal with it, that's fine, we won't ride together.

I would suggest that this is a healthy attitude for everyone to adopt. Ride what you like, ride with people who will like you for you. Don't sweat the ******bags. [tm]

Yeah, but the nice thing is now there are cheap brand new options like Kogswell, IRO, off-the-shelf models from mainstream vendors rebadged and sold even cheaper on eBay. You can't get a used track frame for $150 anymore, but you can get a new one for $250 or a complete for $350.

ive always been against the whole "damn all these people starting a fixed trend" probably in part because i have only been into it for a bit less than two years.

but last night i saw a freewheel pista with a front and back brake. it bummed me out because i couldnt understand why the person had dropped probably near 600$ on something and not even use it for anything it is made for. it was a newer one too so im sure it had come with the fixed/fixed hub.

i know this arguement has been beaten to death but i just wanted to voice that i really understand a lot of the frustration now.

I figure, I'll build up my conversion, actually ride it around town as a short trip bike, and continually use it until the trend goes away. I don't much care about the trend, but we all know it won't last.

A classic Atala frame with full Campagnolo Pista Record groupo, Brooks leather saddle, Alfredo Binda double toe straps and Cinelli stem, is a vision most people will never see with their own eyes, let alone ride. Such a machine was made for a champion of the days of old and is the goal of any true track rider to assemble.

I admire the beauty of the old, but it is certainly not my goal in life to actually own such a thing. My goal as a "true track rider" is to ride my track bike faster and faster, and to have fun.

Even if you go to one of the little track bike boutiques that have been popping up and get a real bike, don’t try to race me over the bridge or in traffic, because you ain’t gonna beat me. You might even get yourself killed by an SUV.

or by a small Datsun... any car will kill you..

Do the pro MTB riders feel the same way when they see "citizens" riding a Fuel? If it's the fear of some dilution of culture, don't worry - I won't tread on anyone's turf and try to hang with you - and please feel free to hate me because I ride that bike over there - or stop over and discuss all things. If we chat and we turn out to be friends, cool. I'll be the one drinking the Americano, no tatts, no piercings, so it'll be obvious.

What were we talking about?

Riding "fixed" is not new. We all know this. Riding a fixed gear bicycle has been, and still is, considered a valid way to maintain cycling fitness in the off season (unless you can afford to fly to the more southern climes in the off season.) I really do not understand the annimosity. I used to ride single speed everywhere for years, but never really considered riding "fixed" 'til I came across the Harris Cyclery website. After some pondering and tinkering I can honestly say I have been converted whole-heartedly. And not one person "old school" or not can shake that from me. I guess we'll see in, oh, say, five years from now who is still riding fixed and who isn't, on a regular basis. I'll be there. And if I see you, I'll nod my head in...not so much approval, but... ackowledgment... ummmmm..... comradery.........whatever you want to call it. I don't care what you ride as long as you ride. And if you ride every day you can, that's all that matters. I prefer to ride "fixed" because it is better for "me". I do admire bicycle messengers/couriers on a professional and, especially, environmental level. I would be interested in seeing how many would still be in the business if it required them to deliver 500 pounds of paper to a customer 5 miles 'cross town. It really isn't about the bike.

Remarkably, I looked at that sight and still I don't get it. I didn't spend much time though, it didn't really seem worth it. Apart from the naked chicks. That was cool.

I must be one of the few and the proud.. No not the Marines(Yes, I am one of those lucky ones too) but I have the bike described above . I had a Regal saddle since Brooks takes too long to break in and it hurts trying to break it in too.

It shouldn't matter what you ride if you're having a good time. It's not what you ride, it's how you ride it and how much fun you have doing so.
