Recreational & Family - Child seat compatibilitiy...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Help! I bought bikes and child seats for the whole family for my husband's birthday. Now, having assembled the bikes over several hours, I have discovered (I think) that the child seats may not work with the bikes we bought. We have Men's 26 inch Schwinn Suburban Sport bikes. The child seats are the kind that don't require a rack for mounting. I can't get the support bars to fit under the seat....any ideas? Do I have to buy a child seat that mounts on a rack? Or do we have to resort to using a trailor? I don't want to have to return the bikes......HELP!
without knowing the seat's architecture, its hard to say...have you tried the local bikeshop for help?

Most of the child seats sold today will attach to either the seat post collar clamp bolt, 2 allen head bolts on the bike's seat stays under the seat collar, or possibly, above the rear brake area. There are a lot of factors involved in attaching the seat to the bike, including the frame size of the bike and the angles of the child seat. It is important that the child's seat be as close to level as possible so that the child is not falling backwards or pitching forwards. It is extremely important that the seat be attached correctly and securely to the bike. I agree with the previous post that you should go to your local quality bike shop and have them look at the fit. They are the experts. Also make sure that the bike seat has been assembled correctly. Personally I am not aware of many child's seats manufactured today that are not sold with a separate rack. It makes attachment, assembly and removal off the bike a lot easier.
