There is a loud creaking noise when the left pedal gets to the top of a revolution and I push down on it. The more resistance, the worse it sounds. No other symptoms. Sorry for being vague.

Swap out pedals.
I had a similar problem on an older road bike. Here's what I did, I adjusted the rear derailleur such that the chain is well centered on the rear cogs for each gear position. Clean and lube them as well.

if you are clippless, you may need to put some soap on the pedal or cleat. This will often quiet my sqeaking pedals.

The race on the left side of the bottom bracket is probably loose - I had the same problem. Tighten up the races on the bottom bracket by tightening bottom bracket nuts this helps old sealed bearing also. If it continues then replace the bottom bracket bearings and/or balls and races if it has loose bearings. I had a similar creak with Phil Wood aluminum races and switched to steel races and retightened and all was fine.

Other things to try: grease pedal threads, retorque crank and chainring bolts.
