I don't know why I've been compulsively posting about all of the dumb-ass moves I've made in the past couple of weeks, but here's another one for ya...
So I was working on my bike tonite in prep for a ride tomorrow. Task one was to fix a flat. That went fine. Task two was to swap out the 15t cog on my hub to a 16. Ok. No big deal. So I throw my wheel back on the bike so that I can remove the cog rotafixa style. I find I have a lot trouble taking em off with a chainwhip so i usually rotafixa off, then put on the new cog with the chainwhip. Anyhow, so I'm torquing on the wheel really hard, really hard, harder and finally some spinning of the cog... but hmmm...it doesn't feel like it's getting looser, and.. um...why is this not coming off, but -- F#%k. I forgot the take the f#$%ing lockring off. DOH! The first thought that comes to my mind is that i stripped the threads on the hub and I feel very sad. The second thought, which makes me slightly less sad, is, "Wow. These lockrings work SUPER well, huh."
I get the wheel off the bike, get out my lockring tool and try to get the sucker off. But it won't budge. Like REAL stubborn. That's cool. i've had stubborn lockrings before, I'll get you off you little b-stard. In the midst of my fifth or sixth go at it, there's sort of a metallic snappy sound. The next thing I know, there's blood coming out of my thumb and the lockring has taken out a chunk of the hook end of my Hozan. Damn. Several more repeated attempts, no dice.
I will take it to the shop tomorrow and have them get the lockring off with their pliers. Which brings me to the thought that i wish I would have bought the pliers instead of the spanner. But John at business cycles kind of convinced me not to -- and how can you not listen to the advice of a guy who's losing out on an extra 14 bucks by giving you his honest opinion!?!?
Anyhow. I hope the threads aren't stripped. That would suck. But it would give me the final excuse I need to buy a new wheel (set :rolleyes: ?) Oh yes. There is always that silver lining.
Too much excitement for a friday night. I gotta finish my beer of defeat and go to bed.
