Bicycle Mechanics - Where to buy Bontrager freehub body?

Any ideas where I can buy a freehub body to match a Bontrager hub? As I searced the web, I did not come across many selling freehub bodies. This seems like it should be a farily common replacement item.

As far as I know, a Shimano freehub body is a Shimano freehub body... Just make sure you get the 8/9 speed version (which is the same), or the 7 speed (for an older bike). Amongst 8/9 speed hubs, you either have the compact version, necessary if your cassette starts with an 11 (or anything above that), and the non-compact version if it starts with a 12.

That's correct. Just to clarify, the freehub body contains the ratceting mechanism and is visible when the cogs are removed. The cogset interface is compatable with Shimano cogs, but I don't think the interface from freehub to hub are the same for the various manufacturers.

During my search, it was hard enough to find freehub bodies for Shimano, let alone Bontrager. So far, The Third Hand was the only source. I guess I'm surprised how hard it is to find such an essential item! My two LBSs are not Trek dealers. The search continues...

You typically have to go the the manufacturer/disributor for all but the more common stuff like shimano and Campy....Check with bontrager.com

Correct! Initially, I could not find an 11mm hex wrench. I like the hex bits on the end of sockets. I checked all the usual consumer places (Sears, auto storsd), then went to a local industrial tool supplier. The industrial supplier stocks Stanley/Proto industrial line of tools and even Stanley/Proto did not have 11mm. They had 10 and 12mm, but skipped over 11mm.

Hmmmm...I converted 11mm to inches (25.4 mm = 1 inch) and found that it was 0.4331 inches. Then I recalled 7/16 = 0.4375 inches, a difference of .004 inches, well within the clearance criteria for this size wrench. Bottom line - 7/16 works for 11mm hex wrench.

I found AE Bike and Airbomb sells freehub bodies for a handful of brands, but not for Bontrager. Perhaps Trek/Bontrager do not distribute these to retail outlets, and they don't list the freehub body on their website.

:o You are somewhat lucky...the nearest LBS is about 20 miles from me. And they SUCK! :p

My LBS tried to find a Campy compatible free hub for my wife's Bontrager hub, Bontrager said it couldn't be done, at least not on this hub (built by DT, BTW).

Ok, thanks. These are Race Lite wheels and we sent the serial number to Bontrager. I'll try again, may upgrade the hub if possible.

My mistake. My touring bike has a Bontrager rim, but on a Shimano hub... which is why I have installed successfully a Shimano freehub body on it.

When I was trying to find a Bontrager stem, a couple years ago, they told me they do not allow they stuff to be sold via the internet/mail order -- only through your local bike shop. That said, I made a phone call to an LBS in Seattle (where we had purchased our bikes). They got the part and mailed it to me.

After a pretty thorough search on the web, you just confirmed that Bontrager doesn't have internet/mail order distributors. I'm not sure if I like that type of marketing strategy, and this will probably affect my future decisions on purchasing Bontrager components. I like doing my own work and mail order makes getting parts easy.

I also just remembered that Trek/Bontrager/Fisher are the same company. The bike is a Fisher Cake (w/ Bontrager cranks, hubs, wheels), and I have a Fisher dealer nearby, so I won't have to trek 20 miles to see Trek.

Wow, I did not know Trek encompassed all these brands! I bought my Fisher last year and that's when I found out about Fisher/Trek. I just learned about the Bontrager/Trek connection last week when the LBS said I had to see a Trek dealer (he was not a Trek dealer). And also Lemond and Klein?!

http://ebiketools.com is an excellent source for the 11mm hex/allen wrench (Park HR-11)......extra long and reaches through the hub so a torque wrench with 11mm socket is acomodated.

Bontrager uses DT Swiss hubs, I believe the 240, for the 2005 wheels. Check out DT Swiss's website.

Where do you get a Bontrager catalouge?
