I just had Aero Bars installed on my C'dale R2000. The Aero Bars have no brakes at the hand position. Going downhill relatively fast, I felt as in free fall. Steering with the elbows, I could not imagine a quick enough shift of hands in case of an emergency such as a car or deer running across my path.
Do you veterans shift the hands to the bar position for downhill?
Any other advise?
I do like the Aero Bars. My speed increased noticeably. I am trying to avoid an accident due to ignorance.

They're really not for day to day use on roads.

I only use mine in time trials.

Anywho, you can continue to have them on for daily riding if you like, but when going down a twisty hill or anywhere where you have to steer (as in, anything that isn't prettymuch straight) do not use them.

They're to twitchy not just b/c you're steering with your elbows, which is the main reason, but also b/c your weight is much farther forward than when riding a regular road bike with hand on the hoods/drops/tops.

If you can sit up in the saddle and stir the bike with your butt, weight shifts, then use them where ever you are comfortable. I use mine on down hills, unless it has sharp corners, or I am new to that road. Use some common sense and you will be ok. ;)

Thank you for the advise. It seems like I will have to restrict the use. I do not need any more accidents. Had a few bad ones all due to fast riding. Perhaps with much more experience?

I hear you and my experience and feelings agree. It really feels terrible at 35 MPH ++
downhill with sudden side wind.
My problem is that I hang around some determined bikers in the Detroit area Metro Parks. That is a circular road with cars and hills. These bikers use their Aero Bars.

I need to study it, some seem to have either brakes or gear shift up by the hands.

Anyway, without the brakes, forget it. Sooner or later there will be a bad crash.
Thanks for your comments.
