I just ordered a Burley Duet tandem. I had been looking at a 2004 catalog and didn't discover that 2005 now has a rear disk brake as standard equipemnt. I am planning on doing some self contained touring and was planning on adding an Arai drum brake. Will I be able to add the Arai drum brake with the disk brakes?

Thanks for your input.

No and Yes.

No, the drum brake and disc brake are mutually exclusive. They can each be used in parallel with a rim brake but not in parallel with each other.

Yes, you can have a disc brake that can be replaced with a drum brake and rim brake for touring without buying a second rear wheel. You should contact your dealer or Burley to confirm this, but taking a quick look at Burley's spec sheet it appears as though they are using an XT tandem hub with a thread-on disc adapter for the Duet.

Again, I'd be sure to contact your dealer and/or Burley and make your brake system preferences known so that you get what you want out of the box. Also, with respect to the thread-on adapters, they work quite well but getting the adapter back off the hub after using the brake under demanding conditions can be difficult. Be sure to use anti-seize compound when installing thread-on disc brake adapters.
