I've been saying for years that it is a dead even tie between:
Anthem by Ayn Rand
and
The Great Divorce by CS Lewis
Other close runner ups:
The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkein
1984 by George Orwell
The Sword of Shanara by Terry Brooks
Karldar

Don't know about the favorite, but Armor by John Steakley is up there pretty high.

The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein is my alltime favorite. I like the sentient machine, the no-bull reality of life in a penal colony, the very human characters, and even the dialect that mostly fades from slightly odd to an effective seasoning by the third chapter.
The subject of the book is freedom from oppressive government and revolution, but is couched in such a good story that I barely noticed.
