tomorrow I plan to build my first set of 4x wheels. I've built a bunch of 3x wheels in the past. do ya'll have any tips for 4x wheels? is building a 4x wheel much different than a 3x?

I've only done 3 cross myself. The only difference would be longer spokes to accomodate 4 crosses. Other than that, the technique should be the same.

They tend to be marginally stronger than 3x. Chances are he's either a big guy or plans on doing some loaded touring

Out of curiosity, why are you doing 4x wheels?

no real reason at all. mainly I've never built a set of 4x wheels. they'll be going on a lugged track frame and I thought 4x would look cool, a little old school, and I'm not too concerned with weight.

Make sure the 4x pattern will work on your hubs. There is a better chance that spokes will cover the head of the spoke adjacent to it. This problem makes changing broken spokes very difficult. The problem is more likely on hubs with a large flange diameter.

with 4x you can choose to bring the leading spoke under the third or fourth cross. third is common in the bmx world. fourth probably makes more sense for a road wheel.
