I saw a piece this morning on a local auto museum, and I know other auto museums exist... So this over glorified mode of transportation is well... over glorified.

So what about Bicycles? Are there bicycle museums around? Is there anything but bike shops to show the progress of bikes? The advances of the technology, the thrill of the races?

There is one in Ohio that I haven't been to yet.

There is one in New York, near Buffalo that I have been to. Small and old fashioned, but facinating stuff. A lot of historic pieces and vintage models.

Shimano has a museum in Osaka Japan. Apparently pretty large & has examples from all over the world.

There is a small bicycle museum in Three Oaks, Michigan.

The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, while not specifically a bike museum, has a nice collection of bikes in the transportation exhibits.

I went to the Bicycle Museum of America back when it was located at the Navy Pier in Chicago. It was pretty sweet at the time, and from looking at the website it looks like it has a bigger collection now. I remember a bamboo bicycle they had very well, but I don't see it on the site.

This is a Dutch bicycle museum. It has an on-line slideshow with a number of very old bikes in it.

I've been to a couple of travelling exhibits. The first time was last summer when at the l'Alpe d'Huez uphill TT. More recently, in May of this year, at the end of the Five Boro Bike Tour there was also a (different) travelling exhibit.

The Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in Crested Butte, CO is sort of a museum. Seeing as "mountain bikes" have only been around for 20 or so years, there's not a lot of history in that museum. Cool place if you're into mtn. biking though, and Crested Butte has some incredible riding.

I have read that there's a small museum near Bellagio, Italy, at the Shrine of La Madonna di Ghisallo, the patroness of cyclists.
