Hello all

First, a quick question anout cogs. I've heard different things about different brands. I thought EAI cogs were decent, but an informed guy at a trustworthy shop in SF told me otherwise. I remember hearing about the questionable quality of Surly cogs, too. I've ridden a suntour, miche and EAI (on my daily ride). To be honest, i can't tell the difference.
Are one of these manufacturers superior to the others? How about Shimano dura ace? they're only $18 on eBay!

I'm pushing 48/18 now (my SF gearing) and its too easy for the flat city I live in now. I mean, it's okay, but I could stand to go faster. More importantly, I'm concerned that I'll get really used to it and when I return to SF, I'll have a tough time with the hills. So, I wanna drop my cog.
Will I feel a staggering difference if I go to 48/16? I'm probably gonna go to 17 first. Any thoughts on that?

Also, while I'm at it, anyone got a 1/8" 17 tooth cog floating around they'd flow me (and mail to me in Spain) on the cheap? Not on the free, but on the cheap?

OH - also - I found a SICK velodrome mere minutes from my house. I'm having a hard time finding out what I need to do to get on it. I'm working on it, though. It's HELLA steep. Seriously. way steeper and tighter than Hellyer.

if you're interested, you can see a lame picture here:

click on "images" and check out the 3rd and 4th pics. I know it doesnt look that steep in these pics, but it is. I've been there. Next time I go, I'm bringing a camera and I'll post pics here.

EAI cogs are probably as good or better than DA, they are very well finished and have the cleanest threads. Surly cogs have gotten better but are still somewhere on the low end of things. Soma cogs are also sorta cheap feeling and didn't thread very well on a hub of mine. I've only heard of a single EAI failure and the when the cog was returned to EAI they sent back a replacement.

i got a da cog and its worked out fine, but the eai cog that i got does seem to be slightly better from the quality. however, i've yet to find a new da cog larger than 16t. maybe i just haven't looked hard enough, but its possible that da only go to 16t.

Dura Ace tops out at 16 (17 for the limited edition Spinal Tap model)
