Just got some mtn bikes for my wife and I. Stumpjumper for me and Rockhopper Comp for her. Anyways, I am trying to put together a tool/spare parts kit to carry on the trails, and for the life of me, I am not sure what all I should take along. I would appreciate any suggestions of "required" items to take along.

On another note, I am wanting to purchase a hydration pack that will also function well as a pack for day hikes. Been looking between the Camelbak MULE, Blowfish, and maybe...the HAWG. Don't want anything too bulky. It seems like all three of these packs are pretty popular on these forums. Again, appreciate any suggestions/recommendations. Thanks.

Spare tube or two, tire levers, CO2, Multi tool w/ chainbreaker and some chain pins (if a shimano chain), extra energy bar.

I have the Rogue Cabelbak. It has a 2 liter bladder, and a couple pockets, and a special pocket for a mini pump. I like it because it has just enough pockets and is not too bulky.

For day packs the MULE carries all you need for mountain biking and a small snack.

For tools, I recommend you get:
- pump
- tire levers
- patch kit
- spare tubes
- multi tool (check out hte Topeak Alien series - e.g. http://topeak.com/products/tool_004.html) This one is also well rated over at mtbr.com
