Bicycle Mechanics - rim tape- electric?

My roommates tube keeps popping. At random times. Like when the bike is leaning against the wall. Spooky. We have deduced that the tube is expanding into the recess of the spoke hole. We have electric tape. Should we use it? There was some flimsy rubber like strip, but no tape. He needs to ride tomorrow. How you folks feel about rocking that rim with electric tape? Thanks

don't, and don't use duct tape either. unless it's an emergency.

over time (month or so) duct/electrical tape will break down so the tape looks like tiger stripes and will eat into your tube cause slow leaks. i tried using duct tape and electrical tape with these: http://www.mrtuffy.com/mrtuffy/ where they overlap and the tape ended up causing a flat after a while.
the couple bucks you're going to save using duct/electrical tape is def. NOT worth it.
just buy some real rim tape and you're problem is solved.

sweet. thanks guys. we pretty much just wanted to hear someone say no, dont do it. and you did. sweet. thanks guys. Ill tell him to walk to bike shop and buy tape. hes a hoser anyway.

Guess I learn from the best(?) I'll do the one thing I haven't done since some as**ole in a car ran into me from behind while I was on my bike and take somebodies car to the bike shop.

I bought two rolls of cloth rim tape from a seller on ebay. I think it was $8 for 100 yards. That should last a while. Electric tape=evil. Oh, they gouged me AU$8/roll for rim tape here. Bastids!

Funny, I had over a year of service on my first electrical tape liner before I removed it to rebuild the wheel. It was in perfect condition when I did so. I have five wheels built up this way and have not had a single bit of trouble with any of them.

Velox is nice and hardly a big ticket item, but if you don't have some sitting around don't sweat it.

Cloth tape is what works: hockey stick tape, tennis racket "protection" tape (not grip), or good-old Velox. All others tend to rot and separate. You can get by for a bit, but in time, it ends up more of a mess than it's worth.

Do you speak from experience and with which sorts of tape exactly? If you poke around, you'll find that I'm hardly the only one here who's been using electrical tape for rim tape. Some folks who've been using it for 25+ years might be surprised to learn that it's prone to rotting and separation.

I've used white cloth first-aid tape for as long as I can remember. Never a problem, cheap, easy to find. Even looks a lot like real rim tape.
