Sometimes I wonder why I am involved in sports that are competing for space with idiots in motor vehicles:

Hey Rockets you have to row in a real zoo there in Newport! I guess you just have to get up uber-early in the AM to avoid the clowns in their stinkpots.....

I row in Long Beach. Less traffic. Fewer people with a common sense/wealth impairment

I guess the point of the thread was two fold. Main Point was that helmets do save lives.
Second point was that alot of people turn into idiots the minute those spark plugs start firing.

well you don't know all the facts.
Maybe she wouldn't have crashed if she hadn't been wearing the helmet, or maybe the helmet caused her injuries to be worse than otherwise

And maybe you're not ridiculous... Nah.... It's easy to see the direct correlation between leg fractures and helmet use.

Helmet saved my life, too. Yay helmets.

Oh, ferchrissake.

She didn't "crash". Someone crashed into her...and unless she had a quite unusual helmet design which impeded her hearing, I have a hard imagining how not wearing a helmet would have helped her avoid the collision.

And nothing in the story suggests the sort of injuries (such as diffuse brain trauma from rapid rotation)
that can be worsened by a helmet

I assume that you're trying to point out that many people overstate the importance of bike helmets...and if so, you are in a way correct; helmets are a lot less important than awareness, caution, and good cycling technique. But no matter how you squint at the data, they do more good than harm. And it's a bit disrespectful to contradict the rider's own judgment that in this case, she's damned glad she was wearing one.

(who wears a helmet, and realizes it's less important than riding well.)

I was being facetious.
I hadn't seen any replies from the helmet deniers so I thought I would repeat their usual arguments.

I used to park in a big underground parking garage under an office tower. We were supposed to use the pedestrian entrance to access the bike racks, but it was very awkard, the door opened outwards, you had to swipe the cardlock, then step back and open the door, while being hemmed in by a railing. Human nature being what it is, all the cyclists would use the auto entrance, tail-gating behind cars entering the garage. In warmer weather the overhead garage doors, would sometimes be left open during the morning rush.

One warm morning, I turned off the street saw the door open and rode in. Suddenly something hit me and I was on the floor of the parkade. I had to think about what had happened, and realized when I saw the overhead door going back up, that it had come down precisely on my head. There was a nasty crease on my helmet and I had a rather sore neck. My helmet probably didn't save my life, but it certainly prevented a nasty head ache and probably a trip to the emergency dept.

Ah, sorry for the exasperated response then. I failed to detect the sarcasm. ;-)

Rockets- do/did you row? What seat?

Or are you just posting random articles.

I rowed for the University of Charleston, WV, (back in the day when they actually cared about the program); Bow and 2 seats in the Varsity 8, and Light 4 (Dad Vail Champion).
Founded and Coached the Dowling College (Long Island, NY) Program.
Currently row with Long Beach Rowing Association (CA) rowing mosty singles.

Its a great sport, but Its been very dificult for me to get to my rowing club. I'm lucky if I get on the water more than twice a week. I actually ride more than I row.
Those articles came from row2k.com.

One good thing about the high price of petroleum is that you are seeing fewer and fewer motor vessels on the water.
