Recentlly i've been finding that when i'm out on a ride my knees start to hurt (more right knee but is in both). I've heard that this is because my seat may be to low but i've raised it a few times and I think that if I raise it anymore I won't be able to get a foot down fast enough when I need to espically on the trails. I find it worst after climbing a few hills which is pretty much all my rides because I live in a very hilly area. The pain is in the front of my knee
if it helps i'm only using platform pedals.

It can be several things. Normally sizing and/or seat height. I have an ongoing battle with my knees. I need to drop the seat to do some of the trail riding I do. The second I hit flats or the transitions between trails I raise the seat making it more of a xc height. Sore knees occur because of several reasons.
1 - muscular imbalance between quads and hams
2 - seat height/bike geometry
3 - improper rest periods
4 - improper stretching
Be sure to give enough rest and if you tweaked it even slightly ice it for that night. Of course you should also get it looked at by a sports doctor. Someone who understands the true functionality of the knee and its place in riding. He/she will be able to help you much more.
as I understand it, pain in front of the knee (i.e. around or just under the knee-cap) means that the seat may be too high. Pain in back of the knee (i.e. the back side of the leg) means the seat is too low.
It sounds like you have it too high and have been raising it to boot.
Don't neglect other issues like pushing too high a gear.
