Classic & Vintage - Mavic G40 Rims. Any info????

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Anyone have any info on old diamond logo Mavic G40 clincher rims? I picked up a pair today and wanted to find out a little more about the rims. ie, reputation, construction, durability, etc. They are dark grey annodized 36 hole clinchers with the old diamond logo decals and a decal that says G-40. I've searched quite a bit and have found nothing. Any info would be great. Also if you've got one (or two) let me know how they've faired. Thanks!

I purchased a wheelset back in 1985 from Colorado cyclist with Mavic G40. Those were used for training because each rim weighs approx. 475g+. Double eyelets. Hard anodized (& heat treated?) and almost indestructible with a properly built wheel. Yes, I still have them.

I have a set of G40 tubulars on my 80's Colnago, bullet proof would be an understatement, i figure about 60,000km with not much truing needed and a couple of overhauls.
Don't worry.
weren't the tubular versions GP4s ?
I get really confused with Mavic rim nomenclature,
can't they go back to Aspin, Montlhery and Gel330?

You know I think your right,I'll check when I get home tonight.
So many bikes and lots of wheels means I get confused!!
Thanks.
Edit: Yep your correct the tubulars are GP4's the clincher set I have are MA40's, both sets are damn fine wheels.
I have tubular GP4's, and fwiw I weigh 250ish and after several hundred miles, no issues.

G40s are good, rugged, reliable rims as far as I am concerned. Mike.
I've been riding GP4s for quite a while (newer yellow/blue?) label
with no problem.
Also have Gel330s which are also really nice lightweight wheels,
and not as fragile as a gel280 or Fiamme Yellow label rim.
The GP40's should be bullet proof as stated above.

Mavic G40 & MA40 wre the hot ticket in 1985, only problems are that the braking is reduced until the braking surfaces grind through the anno and sometimes, not always, the rim joint needs dressing. Oh, yes a decade on the eyelets corrode if ridden at the beach.

As stated , the G40 is a quality, very strong heat treated rim with reinforced eyelets. Any wheels built with them should last many miles.
