Here's a good story about a guy living in the burbs having millions in the bank and won't own a car. I know quite of few guys making over 100K and living in the city who don't own cars either. Meanwhile, you hear of folks all the time making 20K or less having to own a car because it's necessary. Go figure.

(1010 WINS) (WATERTOWN, N.Y.) The northern New York man who hit the second largest New York Lotto jackpot ever won by an individual doesn't own a car and apparently isn't in a hurry to get one.

Garry McGivney of Watertown can afford plenty of vehicles now that he's $56 million richer after the six numbers he has been playing for 15 years matched those drawn in last Saturday night's Lotto drawing.

The 66-year-old retired state worker says he prefers to walk. McGivney says he may buy a car with his winnings, but is more likely to rent one when he needs to. He celebrated last night by going out for ice cream with a friend.

McGivney chose the lump-sum payment option, meaning he'll get about $28 million before taxes.

Lottery officials have scheduled a news conference this afternoon at a Syracuse restaurant to formally introduce New York's latest millionaire.

He won't have to walk there. The lottery office is sending a limo to pick him up.

It just goes to show you what people value most in their lives. Even with all that money he still only wants to "rent" a car instead of buying a new one. Incredible.

If that was Me . . . I'd buy everyone I know a bike that fits their lifestyle. LOL And I would explain to them that I made an effort to enrich and lengthen their lifes, and therefor given them the ultimate gift :D

It's good to read a story like this where the Lotto winner is actually a guy with some sense and values.

FWIW, not every millionaire rides around in a fancy car. Once in a while, you do hear about the odd guy with lots of money who just prefers to live simply. I've heard that at least one of the founders of Google (Sergey Brin, I think) doesn't own a car and rides his bicycle to work.

overall, i think there are lots of people with a sense of values... we just don't hear about them all that often. thanks to dahon for posting the article. it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

*scratches chin* i STILL wonder if he'd buy me a bike...

Considering the main type people the mainstream news is aimed at, Yes, I'd say it's newsworthy. Even if it's purpose is to show what an eccentric this "nut" is, although to all of us, it just makes sense

Yep it's newsworthy and thanks for posting it.

Guy's not only smart enough to win the Lotto ;-) he's smart enough to not run himself ragged earning that average $8k after-taxes it takes (per AAA statistics) it costs to own a car.

Good one.

I guess it made the news because even the very poor are stuck owning cars they can't afford. Owning a motorcar is such a part of the American fabric that somone who doesn't participate must be on the verge of bankruptcy.

Here's a guy that can afford the most expensive car in production but chooses to walk. I know the town he lives in and it's not the most commuter friendly place in the world.

That's why I think this made the news. It was to show this man to be insane or strange because he won't buy a car with all that money. Not having a car is considered an oddity in the same category as the woman with three breasts or the man who barks like a dog.

Pics? (I keed, I keed!)

Seriously, 1010 WINS likes to report on "weird" stuff like this. I'm glad to hear about it and will use it as an example in future arguments. :)

If I won that much money, I can guarantee that I would have cars. Probably some GT40's, Ferrari's and maybe a hydroplane. I would also have an airplane hanger to store them in.

Yeah, he may ride his bike occasionaly, but Mr. Brin DEFINITELY owns a car (an exotic sports car).....sorry, 60 minutes is one of the few shows I watch on TV.
