I'm thinking of replacing my freewheel with a wide range freewheel (13-34 tooth) as I freely admit to wanting a granny gear. Do I have to use a mountain bike rear derailleur for this, or are some road RDs okay?

I'll be using a 6 or 7 speed freewheel and will continue to use friction shifting, so road/MTBshift lever compatibility shouldn't be a problem.
