General Cycling Discussion - Punk kids robbed my favorite bike shop!

I just found out that my favorite bike shop in the Oklahoma City area got robbed during business hours and put one of the owners out of commission for a while. A couple of kids came in to look at skateboard equipment and the owner came out to tend to them (skater kids have a history of being theft risks) and they seemed ok so he went back to the repair area. The kids had the audacity to shout "Sorry for doing this" as they bolted out the door with $400 in skating equipment. He had to take off his shoes to chase them (the shoes weren't good for running) and the hot cement caused 2nd degree burns on his feet. What's up with these kids!? Drivers and now punk kids won't give the cycling world any respect! Anyway, I just wanted to rant.

That really sucks. We have a lot of petty crime like that here in Portland.

yes please. I mean I have seen some bad riders. But this seems differnt.

Yes agreed. Or the really expensive stuff. Except that wouldnt work too well. Boards themselves cost about 100 bucks if i remember correctly.

They should stock it, but keep demo models on the wall...BOLTED on the wall or in a lucite case. If they want it, grab a cardboard ticket and bring it to the counter. If they don't like it.....tough tamales.

another option is a security camera at the door, so next time you can supply a mugshot to the police.

At my LBS they keep all that stuff behind a locked gate thing... to prevent these kind of incidents.

Hey, I think skaters are pretty cool. I only used the word punk regarding those particular kids thievery. I use that term for any thief (I've been robbed and I don't like it). I don't consider skaters to be punks. Some of my best friends are skaters. Should have explained that. Anyway, the shop is on the northwest side of town near 63rd and Meridian, it goes by the name Celestial Cycles. The owners are pretty cool and really great guys, plus they are a KHS dealer.

Sorry to threadjack, but is there some newer, evil definition of the word 'punk' that I'm missing? I took the OP to mean 'punk' in the Chief Wiggum sense of, "those punk kids." Did you mean 'punk' as in punk music? And if they're stealing, doesn't that qualify them for punkhood whether they apologize or not? Just confused.

Yeah, I meant it in the Chief Wiggum sense in the OP, not in the musical sense (I think there is a difference). Actually, the original use of "punk" was a prison term having some sort of sexual reference, I do not mean it in that sense.

As for "punkdom", I would say that they have qualified for punkdom. However, I would remove them from that status if they expressed genuine sorrow, turned from their ways and were willing to make restitution (even if they coulnd't make it).

It didn't put it out of business. It really slowed them down in terms of repair turnaround because it put one of the owners out of commission for a week since the whole incident got him injured.

Ban skate punks! They are posers anyway!!!

I didn't realize we were all one big community... wow... that is a bummer.

We have an LBS that got robbed last summer (perp grabbed a bike from out front and took off). Store owner took off after him in the shop van. Perp ended up in an open field, dropped the bike and ran. That didn't stop the owner though. He stopped the van and got out and chased the perp down on foot. Finally caught him and took him down. Several women who witnessed the foot chase came running up with twine and belts and helped secure the perp. The owner ws quite proud of himself. Perp went to jail.

Owner now locks bikes that are out front. Also has security cameras inside (always has). Has locking bars over the windows that are closed after hours. His shop is in a questionable part of town (every city seems to have one). Does good enough business that he opened another shop.

Similar story at the LBS I worked at but the guy on duty at the time had the right shoes, asked another customer to watch the store (LOL) and was fast enough to catch the guy. After about 1 km the thief realized he wasn't getting away so he dropped the item (I forget what it was) and kept going :D

Someone should really tell these stories to pat at bay ridge bikes in brooklyn. She handed me a $1500 bike and said take it for a test ride, just go!

unfortunetly in my town there are skaters, except alot (not all) are POSUERS!

Yeah, my shop is the same way. They let people test ride the bikes in the parking lot without ID or anything... Hopefully some prick doesn't run off with one of the $6000 bikes while they're supposedly test riding it.

So, out of curiousity, what do you think about the car driving community? Or the walking community?

Wait a sec, do either of these qualify as "communities?" If the actions of one or more individual cyclists reflect on the "community" as a whole, then I guess rude drivers make all other drivers look bad.

we need to clarify somthing here, i just felt i have to point this out, they where burgled not robbed. A burgulary is where somthing is e.g. shopliffted, you basicly try and take it with out any one seeing you do it. A robbery is where you (ussaly with a weapon) demand for somthing to be given to you, for example you draw a knife out and say im taking this bike.

I thought i had to tell you this because when my dad was younger he ran over to a police station round the corner fomr where he had just witnesed a crime and told them of the robbery, they rushed over there only to realise it was not a robbery and just a buglery, when the police relaised there where no people in danger they just left the scene.
