On Wednesday, the North Carolina Legislature passed a law permitting beer with up to 15% alcohol to be sold in the state.
Until now, the state cap on alcohol content for beer was 6%.

August 13, 2005 is the official date of the lifting of the cap, unless the Governor signs it into law before then.

Interesting news ... what kind of beer has that much alcohol in it? I think the highest percentage I've had is just under 7.

I've never understood why there is a limit @ all. As stated, some great beer styles are @ well over 6% ABV, and/or ABW.

So you can buy liquor that is close to 100% alcohol, but not beer above a limit that actually limits the brewer in terms of the beer styles he can brew? BTW, I've never understood why we cannot distill our own liquor @ ANY amount, or even brew our own beer (in PA) in a quantity of more than 100 gallons/year. In a supposed "free country", these arbitrary alcohol laws are ridiculous, and will leave the world in time - just not in my time. :(

for what it's worth....Stone Old Guardian (barleywine) is in the high 14% range.

Then sam adam's millineum was I think 32% if my memory is correct (their attempt at making the world's strongest beer).

Did this restrict malt liquor too?

Did this restrict malt liquor too?

Cheap fortified wine, already on the store shelves, can be up to 24% ABV. It's sold for $3 a 750ml. A few malt liquors may appear in the marketplace, but they tend to be between 6-8% ABV. That's a lot lower than cheap fortified wine.

Malt liquor is a dying category. The entire malt liquor market is under 2%, and only 1/4 of that 2% (0.5% in total) is malt liquor above 6%.

I think 14% is the limit, then the yeast kills itself with more. So pretty much anything above that's gotta be distilled. Then it's no longer beer, eh?

Finally. I can get Dragon Stout again.

Now if only florida would start allowing beer to be mailed in....I'm sick of the crappy selection most of the stores here have....I want my old guardian, my rogue soba, some arrogant bastard, and of course trois pistoles, and mortality stout.

I loved california liquor stores....such great selection! Florida.....$*&# you....$*&% you to the fiery rings of hades....

Hmmm, I post about a NC meetup and only jack replies. A post about NC beer gets much more attention.

Does this mean more people will veer into oncoming traffic and more people will get drunk come home and try to kill their roommates? If so sweet - just too bad that innocents have to get killed along the way - still schweet.

Exactly! Because all beer drinkers are drinking and driving.

Not a matter of all . but far too many have to drive back home or drive to the gas station or to a friends after drinking. And those who don't come home and .. well there are far too few of those too

These are gourmet beers. It is unlikely you will find any of them at the corner store. Many of them are five to seven bucks a bottle. I live on a country road and pick up beer bottles all the time that have been tossed in my ditch. In six years I have yet to pick up an import empty. The alkies will continue drinking the cheap stuff.

The meetup thread was in Ride Partners, which might have been part of the problem.

I used to drink with a bloke who was a big Hi-Test fan. (Other Canucks will know what I'm talking about here) He'd constantly say, "You know, three of these is like four of those," referring to my nice micro-brew. My question: "If the only reason you're drinking is to get gooned, why are you drinking BEER at all? Here, have a Lysol."

A buddy from thunder bay likes to bring down some of the high-test canadian beer. Of course it all tastes like crap, so he drinks regular stuff, while making fun of us for drinking 'weak' beer. Nobody seems to call him on it though.
