About what tyre pressure should you pump your tyres to for racing?

The tires should have a max rating printed on the sidewall. Most clincher tires (those with a separate tube) run anywhere between 110 and 130 psi (although some go a bit higher). Tubulars (those with a tube and tire as one piece) can go much higher (180+psi). In any case, be sure to read the tire. Even those with a max rating of 130 psi may have a recommended pressure of 120 psi. Inflating beyond the max may leave you more prone to blowouts whereas under inflation can lead to increased rolling resistence or even flats.

To add to what RTT posted...if your light (150+-30lbs) you can probably get more comfort from being alittle under inflated say 100psi, and not have too much trouble with pinch flats. If you're heavier you'll need to get closer to the max to avoid pinch flats. Best thing to do would be to try a few different pressures over the same route and see for yourself what you like best. Try a few low pressures and a few high pressures, just don't go over max. Experimentation is the fun part of live, enjoy it as much as possible.
