A recent thread made me curious and so I would like
to run a poll as to the eating habits of cyclist
around the world.

Which would you classify yourself as?

I'm following a diabetic diet and one for high cholesterol. Counting carbs, etc. I have gone from a carnivoire who occasonally ate vegies in the form of beer and chips to a guy who carefully watches his diet and doesn't drink.

I eat some meat, but not anywhere
near as much as I used to
(gee I hope they don't kick me outta texas
for saying that! )
its not something I set out to do,
I just kind of find it doesn't appeal to
me as much as it used to.

I am mostly vegan, with some dairy and an occasional serving of salmon.

I typically eat meat at least once a day. Don't really like it first thing in the morning for some reason. Occasionally I'll eat a slice of bacon, if it's crispy enough. I try to eat veggies at least once a day. My childhood nearly proved that you can live without many veggies. My big fear is that my kids will be as picky as I was/am. I am working on it, but some things I just can't force myself to eat.

I'm an omnivore. I don't rule anything out by source or type, but I'm trying to only eat "real" food. My wife and I spent a fortune remodeling our kitchen this year so by God I'm gonna cook me some food!

There is "Meat" and there is "Meat."

My wife and I tend towards salmon, skinless chicken, lean pork. Never, never, never have steak full of fat, etc.

Try to keep my fat intake of good quality - canola oil, olive oil, peanuts oil.

I think people would eat a lot less meat if they had to kill the animal themselves.

The reason I turned Vegghead was I saw a $.99 fish I had in a tank PLAYING in the air bubbles. If that fish enjoyed playing, then killing it would be terrible! And if killing a little fish is bad, I just don't want the responsibility of having to have someone die for me to eat.

OneOldRoadie,

Shame on you for starting a war! :crash:

I understand that the typical American diet, which is heavy on meat, fat and carbs, and low on fruits and veggies (and whole grains) is not the healthiest in the world. Though I generally have little conscience about eating flesh, my education instructs me to eat more veggies and less cheeseburgers and coke.

If you want to lose weight (or stop gaining it,) substituting vegetable dishes for many of the high-fat or high-sugar snacks can help. Vegetables are typically high in bulk, so they fill you up, but low in calories, so they don't fill you out.

Also, my digestion is not healthy if I don't eat vegetables regularly. I wonder how much colon cancer (and other illnesses) would be prevented through eating more veggies?

The only drawback to veggies is that I have to really use my dental floss more agressively... :D

And just how do you think a carrot feels when you pull it out of the ground? If you listen carefully, you can hear their scream for mercy. And an apple when forcefully separated from its mother?

I once knew a guy who claimed to be a "breatharian" (actually I was asked to ghost write his aurobiography) - someone who lives on air alone, until he was caught sneaking a Big Mac.

Hey, we all got to eat SOMETHING!!

For strict carnivores, "whole animal" diets include all of the predigested veggies in the gut of the prey. In the case of cats, who are very prone to urinary tract blockages on cat food diets that are not especially adjusted to produce the right pH in their urinary system, this is very important. If your cat has FLUTD and won't eat the food the vet prescribes, you can try feeding it like a snake. Whole mouse diets work quite well. That is part of the reason that most prey animals are herbivores or omnivores, the predator needs those vitamins.

Not sure I agree with that 1oldroadie - if you believe in evolution, which I do, the reason our brains are the size they are now is because we came down from the trees and started hunting in teams, and eating the meat we caught. the extra protein allowed our brains to develop enormously. there have found baboons today who have started catching animals to eat - basically us about 100,000 years ago...

I'll eat anything. ANYTHING.

I didn't get to be top of the food chain for nothing.

I have no moral issues about eating any kind of animal, the big issue is "does it taste good?".

Before anyone starts - People don't count as animals. Great apes just aren't available in the supermarkets here, and whaling is banned. But if I was on holiday in Norway . . . .

Its all fuel for the furnace folks. Burn enough calories daily and you don't have to worry too much about intake.

Don't float!
That dang cat my wife keeps around here eat nothing but meat and is as dumb as a stump.
The meat eaters in the animal world just eat and sleep, and when there is nothing around to eat, they die.

Mans move to civilization was farming and herding so he always had something to eat.

BUT, I do not mean to push my feeling off on to anyone else! I have decided that I do not want something to die for me to eat. If you do (as my wife does) that is OK with me.

(There are some places I wouldn't dare bring my cat for fear someone would want to eat her!)

Vegie for about 13 years. Reason? We spent every bit of our savings and went into some debt paying for a couple of big operations to keep one of our dogs alive.

When we got home from the hospital we couldn't see the difference between eating meat and allowing our dog to die. Went veggie overnight and apart from a couple of early times when friends made us fish and we felt unable to say, veggie since.

I'm not the best vegetarian in the world (if I could cope with the lifestyle change I'd try to be vegan) but I do my best.

We are "semi-vegetarians". We eat mostly friut and veggies but have meat about once a week. Usually chicken or fish. When we do have red meat it is usually a buffalo burger. Buffalo meat from Whole Foods.

In the "old days" when I ate red meat on a regular basis I felt weighed down and bloated. Was the stuff rotting in my stomach? :( Does Gas-X help the bloating? :D

Do vegetarians include dairy products in their diet? I eat non-fat yogurt 3 or 4 times a week and use skim milk on my cereal.

When you eat kale or collards do you include cornbread and butter beans in the meal? If you don't you are committing a terrible sacrilege. ;)

I used to follow those trucks all the time worked near a processing plant, didn't change me into a veggie, chicken is still the meat I eat the most followed by hamburger (hmm cheese burgers YUM) but no more mass produced I will pay the extra price and by humanly(sp) raised poultry (not free range some can be tough) and locally grown!!!! being carnivorous no guilt here :)

Semi-veg. I took so much biology in high school and college that I could name all those 'extra' parts. It got too disgusting to think about how I was eating, say, the fasia- that layer of tissue that holds the guts in place. Now I can't even remember if I'm spelling it right, but it still disgusts me. It's not worth my trying to eat much because I inspect every bite for anything that looks suspicious, and when I'm done I've only eaten 1/4! I did have a filet mingon a few weeks ago after about 4 years being steak-less and my god! I thought I had food poisoning; my stomach hurt for a week. I missed work I felt so sick. I still eat some things like canned tuna, or thinly sliced deli turkey, and CRAB LEGS(yuuummy!). Not much of a moral issue for me, it just makes me wanna generally hurl.

Well, the reason it hangs around is because we don't eat enough veggies to push it through fast enough. Especially if we eat a pound of steak at one sitting!

Of course, eggs can go right through you.

You're not from the south are you girl? I can maybe understand if you didn't like collard greens.....BUT CORNBREAD! What do you eat with your buttermilk, Patatochips?

Natophelia
08-09-02, 02:20 PM
oh god...buttermilk....I smelled it once when I was about 8. But I do like every kind of 'green' I've tried. I love me some veggies! No, I guess the whole southern thing never completely settled in :) My dad is French Canadian and we lived there until I was 5. My mom lived most of her life out west or in Montreal (to keep this on the topic of food...I LOVE beaver tails, putine, brown sugar candy, fish cakes, and funny enough...meat pies! All stuff I hog out on when I go to Montreal.), and her grandmother was from Russia. I do, however, love sweet potato casserole, hush puppies, and green bean casserole! Considering that, can I at least stay in limbo for a while until I prove myself worthy of heaven??

Cool poll!! I find it interesting to see the variety of diets.
My wife and I are omivores also. I love a good steak(well trimmed of course) with a hearty salad(no fat dressing, of course) and a good helping of veggies( isn't salad a veggie??). Orange ruffie fish or scallops are my choice for aquatic food.

My mantra. . .

No mayo.
No ice cream.
Red meat sparingly.

Chicken is the protein source of choice, though I'm having some reservations since I just finished a brutal week of salmonella food poisoning. Kept me off the bike (and in the bathroom) for a week.

I'm definately in the minority here! I'm a meat eater and proud of it! My Argentine decent has a lot to do with it.

Whenever we had a family gathering or special occasion, Dad would fire up the grill (charcoal of course!) and start cooking his Asado. First it was blood sausage, chorizo, then some kidneys, and maybe some sweet bread. Then the briskett and steaks. The Asado would go all day! Nothing like a great big steak on the grill!

I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

BTW, I when I'm driving North on I-75 and just south of Wildwood, there is a billboard by the beef industry showing a grilled steak being cut with a pink middle. The caption reads, "What Vegetarians eat when they cheat." I always get a laugh when I see it!

Sorry to dissapoint :) I like the crunchy coating on fried chicken; it's the chicken itself I have a hard time eating! A couple of all white meat chicken strips from KFC take care of that for the most part. I will a few times a year eat pulled pork barbeque, but only after I dig around to inspect for those gross little fat blobs that look like jelly fish. The only ribs I'll eat are the ones this family friend makes. His name's Leon and he's near 70. Soaks/cooks them until the meat falls off the bones. I won't touch ribs from anywhere else. Siiiiiiiiiiigh....ah's trahyin tuh be uh good lil' suthuhnuh....

I tried to go 'total vegetarian' a few years ago, but it was difficult -- especially eating out with friends/family in restaurants. So... I added the occasional fish to my diet, and last year I began eating chicken & turkey as well. Still, I don't eat meat very often. It's just nice to have the option once in awhile. I also watch where it comes from. I won't eat a fish sandwich, or anything else for that matter, from McDonald's or Burger King anymore.

I don't think I could ever touch beef again. Grilled steak doesn't smell very good to me anymore, and frankly, I'm afraid of what it would do to my stomach after several years of not eating the stuff. I used to be a steak lover, too.
