i've seen guys take turns on recumbents way faster than i can on my road bike but that doesn't seem like a reason to switch
but anyway why?

Why not? (couldn't resist.)
I bought mine because I thought it looked like fun. Something different. I didn't even think about whether or not they go faster or anything. I just thought it looked like something fun to try.
They are fun. They aren't the same as riding a regular bike. Similar, but it's like learning to ride a bike all over again. And for the most part they don't hurt. I can ride all day. The only limits are my own endurance and fitness, not how much pain I can bear. Sometimes I feel like being casual and I feel like I'm riding a low-rider Harley bike or something. There I am, sipping my cappuchino, looking around at the scenery, enjoying a cool breeze. Sometimes I feel like pushing myself and I feel like I'm flying, especially where it's flat or slightly downhill. My bike is whatever I want it to be that day.
And yes, it is very fun to pedal all the way through a turn.

but anyway why? When you have learnt to ride a recumbent and discovered the great difference in comfort and speed, you will ask yourself "Why ride a DF?"
