Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Any advice on how to make them (mtb tires)

True. However, there are a few problems with homemade studded tires: lack of durability (especially if you hit patches of bare pavement), and premature wear of the tubes (unless you do a perfect job). Homemade tires are, however, better than commercial tires for races on ice, but not for traffic.
Besides, there are good commercial tires available. The general concensus is that nothing beats the Nokian tires for their grip on ice _and_ durability. They are rather expensive, however. There are a few other makers with much cheaper studded tires (IRC comes to mind) that give approximately 80% of the performance of the Nokian.
