Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Why is the forum so slow?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I find the Bike Forums to be incredibly slow a lot of the time. By slow, I'm referring to navigating around the site -- clicking on various forums or threads, cicking "back" on my browser to return to a previous page, etc.
It's not my computer, nor is it my internet access (cable), because I can navigate quickly on other websites, even the notoriously slow PBase.
Are there just too many people on the BF at one time, slowing it up?
Ding ding ding! ;)
Yeah... we have a surge in new members, which slows the server. But Joe is looking to get yet another one, so we just need to hang in there a bit longer until he gets something he can afford/will accomodate for a large number of new users.
Hang in there- he really does want to resolve the issues with the current server.

Thanks for the quick reply -- no pun intended! I thought that was probably the issue! I'll hang in there...
Not a problem. Joe definitely has concerns. He'll resolve them as soon as he's able.

We're getting like 1000+ users even in the nonpeak hours. Almost triple that for peak.

Just purchased the 2nd server, I hope to have it fully configured and running in the next few days, 4 dual xeon 2.8Ghz processors with 8 gig of ram split over two servers, this should be good for another year... i hope ;)
I see you're using the Planet as your host. I've used them in the past and it's definitely not for lack of bandwidth into/out of their facility there in Dallas! (I'm getting 47ms round trip ping times which is impressive).
Running an SQL server is obviously a utilization hog. I have no idea how you're configured (nor am I being nosey and asking) but I've talked to a lot of webmasters who've had success running a database server(s) and then seperate page delivery server(s). Food for thought anway if you're hungry.
Definitely looking forward to decreased page delivery time! Thanks for your efforts..

The original plan was to go with a dual server setup from ThePlanet, but keeping costs down and simplicity up, I decided to move over to LiquidWeb.com with a single server, dual Opteron 244's with 8 gig of ram sitting on a 36GB SCSI HD's setup (Raid 1). Correctly configured, this machine should fly.

I love it when you talk like that! Not being terribly 'puter savvy, I have no idea what it means, of course, but it sounds good!

Sounds like a good plan. Hate to see you leave The Planet because they rock, but that is one mean machine you're moving to! Thanks for the info and I'm definitely looking forward to the boost in speed. Any idea when you'll be jumping over to it? Good luck with the move.
