Bicycle Mechanics - 8 speed powerlink questions...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
ok, i was working on my sirrus, as that's going to be my wife's ride (hoping to get her hooked on cycling) and i got the SRAM powerlink for 8 speed (silver color). i got the 9 speed powerlink for my bike and it works wonderful with my shimano 9 speed chain.
but.. today as i was installing the 8 speed powerlink onto the 8 speed shimano chain on the sirrus.. it seem like the shimano chain was too fat (even though on the chain itself says NARROW.. my arse!) anyway, it went through the holes but after i tried to pull on it for it to clip in.. it wouldn't. my guess is that the shimano chain is too fat.
so... because of pulling on it and trying to force that mofo to clip into each other.. hand slipped and now top of my right hand has 3 deep holes from the 52T chainring. broke my wife's heart... i know i know.. i'm her baby.
anyhoo... so it should fit right, i mean no reason why it shouldn't. i'm sure that someone you guys have 8 speed shimano chain with the powerlink.. question is.. was it a pain in the a$$ to install for you? or should i just get a SRAM 8 speed chain and install it on my wife's shimano 8 speed sirrus?
thanks... time to put more neosporin on there...
no one answered? man.. after my ride, i was hoping someone would have posted something.. any help guys??

Basically the SRAM 8-speed powerlink is a little narrow for the Shimano 8-speed chain. Apparently you can use the 9-speed (gold) powerlink just fine. You can find out more by doing a search on POWERLINK SHIMANO. Personally I just bought a card of six Connex which works just as well.

thanks... time to put more neosporin on there...A shimano HG 8 chain is too wide for a Sram 8 link.Shaimno HG 8 chain is 7.4mm and Sram 8 is 7.1. IF ya just gotta do it try a shimano IG 8 chain which is 7.1mm
ah.. thanks gummy bear and sydney.. i'll probably look into getting either the connex or the IG8 chain.. which ever is easier to be found.

cool... just to make sure.. 8speed SRAM chain will work with the shimano 8 speed? also, is there a particular model of the 8 speed SRAM chain i need???
I have this chain (http://www.supergo.com/profile.cfm?LPROD_ID=13220&srccode=1749) (SRAM PC-58) on my roadie. Rest of the bike is Shimano (rear cogs, both derailleurs). I've been very happy with it so far.

also, is there a particular model of the 8 speed SRAM chain i need???I'd suggest the PC 58 model. The PC 48 tends to rust
cool.. i'll go with the PC58 then. thanks~
