When I last posted about this, the bicycle I call "Michelle Pfieffer the Carbon Fiber Wonder Bike" had been shipped to far-off California for a small waranteed repair and a fresh coat of paint. Last Friday my friend BJ, the owner of my LBS, called to tell me that my bike was back.
I immediately hurried down to the shop to see it. I opened the box myself. The chipped and scratched white frame is now flawless, gleaming mango. The broken seat post collar has been replaced. The dull white drop outs are now shiny polished metal. My bicycle is beautiful again. It barely looks like the same bike. (I wondered for a while if I would have to rename it. I decided that this won't be necessary as its namesake has also, apparently, had some work done). I am ecstatic.
The problem? BJ is on vacation. The bare frame of my bicycle hangs in the window of his shop, waiting until he returns to be built up again. I won't get to ride it until sometime next week. Waiting is agony.
This morning I am going to buy a new mini-van. Well, it's new to me. I think I got a pretty good deal on a low mileage vehicle. My biggest concern with this van is whether I'll be able to toss a bike in it as easily as I could the old one. All in all, buying this van has been a depressing process.
I get excited about having an old bike painted but depressed about buying a new gas-burner. I guess I don't value things the way the my surrounding culture does. I'd ask "What's wrong with me?" if I didn't think something was wrong with the rest of the world.
