General Cycling Discussion - Hot Dawg, I averaged 20 mph, for more than a few minutes. . .

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Sadly, it was on a 7.4 mile (approx.) run, almost all downhill.
But I averaged 20 mph! (my cheap thrill of the day).
What's your highest average speed and how long did you hold it?

Hey, a thrill's a thrill, know what I mean? Not my fastest ever by far, but today I averaged 20.1 for 50 miles.

I averaged 160kph at a stoplight for about 2 minutes once.

Dang! Yer better than I am. It was a cheap thrill because my usual average around here is about 12 mph, mainly because i am so slow up hills.

This sounds like the cadence of 245 at 5 mph I got once riding beneath some power lines . . . :)
If you tuck in, you can probably hit 25. :)

Average vs how long? I've held 30.2 for about hmmm 3 or 5 seconds. I ride a big slug of a hybrid, my best over any distance is about 15-15.5 for 4 miles (my commute to work).
[edit] BTW - crank it up to 25, and hold it for about 2200 miles more, and you'll be right up there with Lance!
I once averaged 26.2 MPH for 45 miles solo... on a slight downhill the whole way...
Then averaged 14 MPH going back up 45 miles... (reality stinks sometimes...)

A few years ago I decided to enter a local Senior Olympics time-trial event. In training for this, I would attack my usual 2.5 mile workout course, doing a couple of warmup laps then trying to go hard for two.
The course is a road circuit around a local park, with a variety of hills, two on each "side". At peak, I averaged 18.5 mph over the course. (I came in fourth in my age group...)
I can generally exceed 30 mph on a level road for Very Short periods.

An average speed encompasses an entire route, which normally ends at the same point it begins. This should cancel out one-way hills. It's not a true average if you only report the gravity-aided sections. If that were the case, then I averaged something like 35 mph on my ride yesterday on the Blue Ridge Parkway (not counting the uphills).
If you tuck in, you can probably hit 25. :)
On the first most steep portion I hit 36 mph (I can't pedal that speed, not geared for it, especially downhill), but as I got down towards the flatter areas down by Ontario International Airport, I was pretty much pedaling all the time plus I had more than a few stoplights to through (one about every 1/4 mile).
I didn't check what you ride but if you have a road bike and you tuck in and stay tucked in, even on the flat part, you should have enough momentum to keep you going for a while.

I had a non stop solo 100 mile time trial with a 24.8mph average. A buddy of mine did a 27.4mph in the same time trial. He was on a faster bike though.

Fastest ave on a ride over 20 miles is 22.8 mph on a 42 mile ride solo.

At first I thought you were friends with lance... but then I realized, low riders. :p

My whole ride was one way, heh, heh! Normally though I ride across the hills here in this valley if I am doing any big distance.
Now if I was going back up to my house, then my average would have been around 8 mph (if I was reeel lucky) as I am pretty much a slug up hills!

congorats!
Its nice when you start to pick up speed. Coming into this year I am a much faster rider, as in I can keep 20 for a much longer time that I could 5-6 months ago. I probably have done 23 for a long time.

Think of this. People (Michael Johnson) have run an average of 23.3mph over 200 meters!
Peak (instantaneous) recorded speed of human running is 26.8mph.
No bikes involved.

AI just betcha he wasn't as big as I am, nor as old when he did it!
I averaged 22.1 mph for a half-hour on a MPP (of all places!) last Friday.
When I was in my twenties, my short legs ran 4 miles in 27 minutes. When I first started riding my hybrid at an 8 mph average, I thought about when I could run faster than I am now riding. Isn't age and atrophe fun!!!

A question: Did you have as much fun then as you are having now? (I hope you are having fun now!)

I averaged 18 mph once, for a few minutes. Not more than 10 minutes though. I have a really heavy mountain bike with low gears, so that was probably pretty good. If I switch over to road tires/slicks, I'll go a lot faster.

About 12 years ago and 30lbs ago, I drafted behind a couple of local racers on one of their training rides and stayed with them for 16 miles. When they finally dropped me up a long incline, I checked my average and it was 23.7 ... with hills!! I was amazed. The next best is 22.3 drafting behind 2 tandems on a hilly ride.
Now ... though ... 30lbs later and in my mid 30's only riding 125 miles a week or so, my best solo no-draft rides are 18.5 to 19.0. My best draft rides withe the club are 21.0. Keep in mind ... both of these are not in flat areas.
Not too bad for a 30 something with about 15 extra lbs on him. ... at least I hope!
For me though, the speed and average mean much less than the overall experience and healthy lifestyle. ;)
