is this possible? i've got a new 9-speed rear wheel and a 7-speed bike - would this cassette (http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=87&subcategory=1109&brand=&sku=6213&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=), or one similar, let me use the wheel with my existing 7-speed drivetrain?

this is a mountain bike, btw. so hub spacing isn't an issue - wheel and bike are both 135 mm.

this is a mountain bike, btw. so hub spacing isn't an issue - wheel and bike are both 135 mm. You need a 4.5mm spacer on the hub body before the cassette,and depending on how the cassette cogs are held together,ther may be bolt or rivet heads on the back side of the cassette that need removed for clearance,unless you want to notch the spacer to accomplish the same thing.

sell the 9 speed wheel and use the money to buy a 7 speed wheel
i recommend a solid wheel as these cut back on wind resistance.
these can be purchased at any local bike shop

what?

no offense, but why would you be making recommendations when you don't know how to change a tube/tyre?

i got the wheel as half of a wheelset because i needed a disc-compatible front, and they were cheap. i want to change my 14-year-old freewheel rear wheel because it's getting ratty. i have a new cassette rear that matches the front (nicer rim, too - Sun CR18 instead of old single-wall Matrix), just need to get functional gears on it.
