Bicycle Mechanics - How difficult is it to change the stem?

I have a bad back. The constant bending over causes some irritation and I feel like if my handlebars were a couple inches higher that my cycling experience could be much more enjoyable. I was thinking about switching to an adjustable stem. Would this help? Is it difficult? I have never done this before.

I'm riding an older Montague folding bike that I bought used, fitted with newer parts like a Rock Shox front fork, new rims & gears, etc.

Also, if an adjustable stem is the way to go can someone recommend a good one that isn't too expensive?

If not, any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Don't forget to check before changing if your cables will reach.
