Northeast - Anybody in the NYC-area?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was thinking more like this..
that's awesome. much better than the '5-mintues before i leave work, microsoft paint hack job' i did. perhaps we should frame it, ride back to the pizza place, and present it to them. they might even put it on the wall next to the menu.
Hey. Would anyone be interested in a more formal system to get together for rides than checking this thread? I was considering setting up a group on .mac where we could have an email list to broadcast when we have rides. It has calendars and such we could use to remind each other of the big rides coming up and we can dump photos and such there as well. Let me know if anyone cares :)
The best thing of course would be a NYC regional forum here.. but the gods of BF don't favor such things :)

Sounds like a really good idea!
Sounds like a really good idea!
Ok I set the basics up. The confusing part is that you have to sign up for a .mac ID (though you do not have to have a Macintosh computer to use this) It will ask you to sign up for a 60-day free trial but it will never make you buy anything (so no freaking out:) ) After the 60-day free trial expires everything with the group will continue working.
I like this better than the yahoo groups because I pay for .Mac so we will never have to look at advertisements.
I think to start it off I need to send invites, so anyone wanting to join PM me with your email and I'll add you. After that any member of the group should be able to invite anyone they like.

yeah, i agree this thread is getting large enough so that it's hard to manage.
we could do something similar with evite as well - i know it's possible to set up recurring events and also uses a calendar, allows anyone to be invited, and sends out reminders. just another option. although i'm not crazy about the goofy graphics and ads, it does get the job done.
but i'd be up for trying wheezl's idea first. i'll PM you my email.

invite hasn't shown up in my inbox yet. hotmail was slow with another email this morning too, so maybe it will take a little while longer.

I messed up. The screen ,where it looks like everything is all done, has a little button saying "send" which I did not scroll down to see and thus click on.

hey wheezl, at some point you might want to start a new thread describing the new .mac group, how to join, sign up, etc.
Just start a thread and dump everything in it like those australians do on the road bike forum.

Koffee is already about to unsticky the Aussie thread.
I'll wait until a I get a few more of the regulars to sign up... cjc, slvoid, and cadd??
Then I'll make a little post.
Let me know if if the "invite" feature works for eveyone. I want anyone to be able to sign anyone else up.
I have a little message in my .sig now so hopefully that will do for now. Then I figure we can post in ride partners once a month or something.

Just PM'd you my email.
Couldn't sign up. Kept asking me for a password that was at least 6 characters long.....I entered a pw that WAS 6 charaters or longer, but it wouldn't take it.
Is anyone else having this issue?

Strange did you try a different one perhaps that was also 6 chars long? you could then try to change it to what you want later?
I can send an email to them asking what the deal is.

I'd bet it's a special-characters problem. Using a password that's alphanumeric only?
(edited - spelling)

that was my first thought, except that I often have wacky chars in my passwd with them. It's worth a shot though

what time do people usually ride at prospect? It seems that every time I go there I see the same few people and when I come to BF I hear a lot more talking about it.

When I ride Prospect it's usually later since I have to go home first to drop off my crap.
So CP around 6:30 or PP around 7:00. But I am usually in CP since I go right after work. I am thinking of shifting to PP since that is closer to home and as it gets darker earlier it won't matter how late it is when I go.

im a brooklyn biker, on the younger end of the spectrum at 18 but i pull off alot of mileage, and have a mountain bike with many road bike parks to keep up with even faster cyclers, ive pulled 40+mph on the downhill. and i usally got to prospect park twice a week. Most of my friends are too lazy to ride the 11 miles up ocean parkway, only to ride some more at the park itself, so i guess most of the time im on my own.
...keep up with even faster cyclers...
Sounds like a challenge... wanna race us? :)

i might just give it a go, maybe on the first meet ill bring my older schwinn road bike just to get a feel for what the competion is made of, its a less comfortable bike so my arse will be quite sore by the time i get there, but its got plently of speed(my legs+ light bike=fast, very fast, faster then you maybe, lol!)
My best days are usally end of the week, biking is my way of relieving all the stress built up during the week, so im usally around there thursday, usally any time, for its my day off from school, fridaylate afternoon, and anytime sat. Sundays are only if i couldnt find time to ride earlier in the week.
Btw, best way to spot me, im the only bike there who dosent wear the spandex stuff, lol, just a pair of running shorts, and a long sleeve shirt.
Just provide a time, and place to meet, and prepare to race your heart out, cause im not going down easy :D
Nice, I'll be on my 35lb commuter hehe.

anybody here in Ny do the Mstour bike tour thing last sun? Anybdy go for the full 100 miles? Who wimped out after 30 miles?
i did 60 miles. Was gunna stop for the 45mile turnaround, but i didnt wanna be the only one turning there so i pushed through up to the 60?
I want to see this race.....Slvoid, you should carry your 10lbs messenger bag. I mean, come on, you're gonna get lapped anyway...so, just carry the bag and get lapped twice.
Wheezl, can you send me another invite? I tried signing up again and it didn't take my password....wtf?

Yeah I did the 100 miler in 5 hrs 10 min.
See now if you had been riding with us, I would've shouted slogans at you, called you a maggot, and made you finish the full 100. :p

There are still 11 days on that invite, but I can send you another if you like. Perhaps you were sending it charachters in your password that were too advanced ;)
Nope....only letters & numbers. Hell, I even tried all letters and all numbers, but it just won't take anything I typed.

Me too. Schedule it for Nov and maybe we can watch the wind carry you off... you'll need that messenger bag for ballast! ;)

I gotta see this race, but I'm thinking it might be boring if only 2 of them are racing. BTW, from what I gather in SS/FG forum, the fast fixie racers do PP in about 7:30 with most averaging 8:00 to 8:30. Either of you two beat that?
Damn, that's freaking fast! I think my best time was like 12 minutes....lol
Damn, that's freaking fast! I think my best time was like 12 minutes....lol
No sh*t.. my best time before porking out was just over 10.. I'd be lucky to hit 15 right now!
My best is right around 8:15 or so. I did a 7 minute once but it was at the back of a group of 20, does that count? :)
I can't attend the SS/FG races cause they're prejudiced against people with gears. :p
I'm not sure why though since the course is relatively flat and you'd think fixed gear is a lot more efficient than geared so they actually have an advantage.

whats pp? Is anything to do with prospect park loop. Ive never timed my self at prospect park, i just conserve energy till the uphill, go up quite fast to get as much speed as possible before the downhill, and zoom down. ive ran he loop in 22 minutes and 7 seconds, if that means much. Ive picked up biking only recently but im a well seasoned runner(4.57 minute mile, and ran track and cross country in H.S.) I guess i have a desire for speed under my own power, driving cars fast, is no where near as exhilerating.
I just wish i had one of those $5 grand bikes. All my bikes together arent worth one grand alone.
Btw, That was those worst part about the tour, was a riding alone, at first i was riding with my dad, but his pace was no faster then my walking pace, and any slower, i would have been going backwards, so i sped up, only for my mp3 player jukebox radio thingy to die out on me, and it become loney and quite boring. I was afraid to stir up a conversation there as well, cause i felt like suck a dork, upright handlebars, purple helmet, an atire of jeans and a guiness beer t-shirt, and a bike making alot of weird noises, After i finished the 60 i knew i had enough in me to do the 100, but i doubt id best your time, slvoid. What bike do you have, and what components do you have, or you one of those types of people who will just surprise the competion on race day?
In the near future im hoping to up grade to atleast shimano 105 components.
and one last thing? whats the ss/fg races? Im kinda out of the loop when it comes to the races, and other bicycling functions cause i dont know any other serious bikers.
BTW, from what I gather in SS/FG forum, the fast fixie racers do PP in about 7:30 with most averaging 8:00 to 8:30. Either of you two beat that?
Low to mid 8's are about right...but the numbers are shrinking! not with me, though. :D not just yet.
We had one rider come in at 7:26.
Still, the times range from 8 to 11 minutes depending on the riders. Last week there were 36, I think?
Simply amazing...to think that this started off with about a half dozen people..

PP = Prospect Park and the 7:30 - 11:00 min times refer to the time it takes to do the loop in PP. SS/FG=single speed/fixed gear bikes.

Hmmm...there goes that theory about geared bike prejudice. If Slovoid brings a used DVD copy of Star Trek 33 1/3 as a prize, can he race?

I witnessed two gangs having a shootout in the parking lot of the ice rink in PP...in 1976. Didn't hear about a recent crime wave in PP though. And if you're riding w/ a group, that provides it's own safety.

One more thing tell those people from the bronx cycle club with the fancy shwinn bikes that they make too much noise with those car horns attached to their bikes and their boomboxes is there a law on noise in the bronx or do they make their own laws ! !

anyone up for training in pp? fixed or road?
Not tonight but I'm free tomorrow night.
I just got back from PP. I was there from 8pm - 10pm.
I rode in PP 2-3 days a week between 1999 and 2003, and I've also walked ALL over it (you don't get to see the nicest parts from the bike loop). Never saw a single crime incident, and the only person I've ever met who was a victim of one had it occur in the early 70s. There's no crime wave - if there was the Post would be all over it. I will say though that one maybe should be careful about hiking deep into the center of the park, and not do that at night.

yep - that should go without saying. sometimes i see some random dude pop out of the trees when i'm riding in the park late at night. i'm thinking to myself - what WERE you doing in there? surely it wasn't hiking or enjoying the scenary. ;)

today ?
**cccrrreeeaaaakkkkk**
Looking for some leisurely rides through the city - daytime or latenight is better (have stuff usually between 7 and 11 PM during the week) and it could be weekday or weekend (though the next two weekends are booked for me). Manhattan would be great but I could travel (that's what they're for, right? ;) ). I read in another post (http://bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=1618965&postcount=38) about night time rides through CP which sound like blast too - any info on those? I'm much more of a night owl and love the streets with most of the cars gone :)
And, I'll go for broke but I recently fitted my flyrod to tackle the blues and stripers that swim around here - if you'd like to do a combined fishing / riding day trip sometime that could be fun. I was riding the other day and watched a guy pull up a 36" blue!
