So, this Saturday I spent about an hour on the road with Bob Roll. He was at a charity bike ride in Indiana. He was jamming around the course with some local team that was entertaining him. I had no business riding with them, but I hopped on their wheels when they came past me and rode with them for a while. (Until they popped me on brutal wall climb.)

I chatted with him a bit at a sag station, nothing earth shattering, but he was very nice.

One thing though. . . before the ride he talked about his saying Tour Day France.

He told a story about when he raced over there and how no matter how hard you tried to pronounce things properly, if someone on the wait staff at a restaurant knew you were American they acted like they couldn't understand you. He said he would be at the end of a grueling stage of the TDF and just trying to get a glass of water back at the hotel and they always made it a struggle until he threatened to pull of one of their arms and beat them with it.

So, he said he still says Tour Day France to get back at those fools.

An added note, at the beginning of the story he said "who wants to talk about le Tour De France" (or something to that effect) and pronounced it perfectly.

Hey what was The Bob riding?

He was riding a felt, but I think it was loaner from the local shop as he made adjustments to his bike at each sag stop.

Yeah, not too shabby. I guess competing in the Tour De France will do that for you. :D

Here's a little write up by Chris Brewer, who was also there:

I have always thoughht that Bobke was playing the buffoon. I enjoy his irreverence and insights from one who has been there. I am also happy to hear that he is a good guy too.

As I have said before, the "tour day france" is his call sign. I'm glad he does it just to make people mad.
