a friend of mine bought a viscount conversion and the bottom bracket's junk. he went to the lbs and they said it'd be 125 bux. does this sound absolutely insane, or is that what something like that's going for with the viscounts? i know that the bottom brackets were problematic with them.

Viscount BB is troublesome to say the least. I abandoned my Visount convo project cause of the BB. If you do go forward with the work, also replace the Viscount "death fork".

If the spindal is still good---the bearing can be bought at any bearing company.Just take the old bearing in to measure by.
Other ways around the viscount BB is to have it tapped for an Italian cups,or buy a sleeve repair bb that slids into the original shell.(seller ricebear had one on ebay)
lastly--Go Postal---file off all the stops, cut the derailer hanger, take out the bridge and lower it,cut down a set of front forks, cut open the originalBB bend it back, braze in a replacement bb shell, file everything for days till it looks right.......

Biketoolsetc.com has an inexpensive sqaure taper sealed bottom bracket that does not need any threads. That might be your cheapest way to go.
