This may sound like a unique story in Michigan but it's common place in New York City to hear famalies that lived all their lives without a car. I have two co-workers that sit right next to me and never had cars. I suspect 20-30 percent of the lawyers in the firm I work for who live in the city are car less. These boys and girls are not poor by any means and save a bundle by not having to pay for motor transport.

It's good to hear someone in another state that managed to live most of their life without a car. In particular those who live in a state where there is little public transit.

This thread got me thinking about my late grandmother, who has never driven a car since her first time at age 16, in 1924. After grandpa's death in 1969, she lived by herself in an apartment and took the bus to her job for the next fifteen years until she had to live in a nursing home. (the transit company was kind enough to move the bus stop across the street for her from way down the street).

I'll bet that there are oodles of older Americans who are car free by choice. There was an interesting article in the Cincinnati Post back in the late '70s about folks who were car-free by choice and some folks who have never got thier driver's license. I would love to be able to find it and post it here.
