I know this sounds trivial when riding $1000 plus bikes, but are their any drawbacks to using cheap water sport bottles you get at a convience store over standard water bottles? I found they are a bit lighter, and I have no reservations tossing it aside when I'm done with them.

I'm a cheepsake and I always think "there goes $5" whenever I toss a bottle, and ussually go back to see if it is still there.

Use whatever you want. My favorite race bottle is a freebie I got from a bike shop. It's clear so I can visually see what's left in it. It opens/closes easily and has a large hole which squirts the water out fast. I'm also a cheapie, I don't toss my bottles unless I know exactly where they are and know I can retrieve them easily.

I carried 3 bottles in my race a couple of weeks ago. I tossed one at the feed zone and had to go back to pick it up. I saw a lot of guys using "disposable" bottles for their 3rd. I thought it was a good idea and will probably do the same in my next long hot road race.

You mean .... Cheapskate?

Do you also mean.... Litter?

The water bottles you get at a gas station usually have a worthless cap on it made of hard plastic that can damage/chip your teeth. The flow isn't nearly as good as a regluar bottle that costs.... umm.... $3?
The good cycling bottles are made of a softer plastic.

I, too, rode in a long road race last week, and I saw guys throwing those cheapsake bottles into the roadside. C'mon! Does the fact that it's a bike race supercede common sense?

I usually like using regular bottles rather than gas station bottles because if I throw a gas station bottle and can't find it, no one will ever pick it up. Someone will probably pick up a good waterbottle if they find it(at least I will), so it reduces litter

I find "Poland Springs" water bottles to have a good nipple. I have another 32oz water bottle that hurts my teeth when I pop out the top to take a swig though. Experiment and see which ones work for you and which ones dont.

To me the whole point of a good water bottle is that they are reuseable. Please don't litter.

Do like I plan on doing next year....visit big races and try to position yourself at the end of feed zones so you can get tossed water bottles for free!

The only one that I have that I haven't reused is one from Trent Lowe at this years TdG.

In the old days, some teams would tackle you if you tried to get their bottles. They didn't want anyone to know what they put in them.

I'm not pointing any fingers here. The year was 1984. That's all I'm going to say.
